Boarding Schools With a Social Just Element

DD is interested in Blair, Peddie, LVille, Hotchkiss, St. Andrew’s, Loomis, Andover and Middlesex.

Can anyone provide me an overview of the vibe of these schools as it relates to social justice on campus?

If you are interested in schools with have an emphasis on social justice, George School should be on your list.

Nowadays I think one would be hard pressed to find a school where SJ is not a meaningful if not enormous “thing” on campus. I can’t speak to each of the schools on your DD’s list, but at PA it’s very, very, very strong. Very. As in woven into just about everything. And that was before the events of this year…

Agree with above…there are so many opportunities for your DD to become involved and expand her interests at so many schools.

@DaddyHoosier your DD should also check out Emma WIllard. They have a long history of providing girls with opportunities to get involved with many social justice projects. Another plus is the school’s proximity to Albany, NY. There are excellent opportunities for internships and “Signature” projects that involve working with organizations, community leaders, and others involved in change in the state legislature. You can go online and learn more - or check out their alumnae magazine.

Also, check out Madeira School @ Washington DC. A friend’s daughter landed a great internship her Senior year.

While I know social justice isn’t limited to racial justice, maybe peruse the Blackat*** instagrams and see what the general themes seem to be. For example, I noticed that some schools tended to have issues more structural (ie, existing practices or faculty/staff v local town relations). The school’s official response will be helpful. For example, SPS has implemented changes based on what they’ve learned from the account. I would also include Choate as a relatively progressive place with regards to social justice.

I think that all schools that are consciously trying to address these issues will have a section on their website like this: https://www.csw.org/student-life/social-justice–multicultural-programming

Note: this year especially, you will have to read between the lines. While all schools claim to strive for inclusiveness, etc., you will have to ferret out who actually lives what they say, to the extent that you wish.

(I liken this to wedding photographers in the old pre-digital days. All would say that they were discreet/unobtrusive, even if the videos of the wedding they’d photographed showed the photographer in the aisle less than 2 feet from the bride!)

Add Concord Academy.

Every BS and HS school has those kids. Some have more/more vocal than others. Some are interwoven into all the other groups. Some really stand out. I can’t think of a school withouth SJW’s in 2020. Read the school newspapers.
Also, if you are going to read the instagram posts be prepared. Some of the posts are really shocking. Also, I’d keep in perspective that some folks post a lot and some people have had a real issue that needs to be addressed and wasn’t or they never mentioned it back in the 80’s/90’s. And some kids have an issue with a particular teacher/admin/other student.
Lots to think about IMO.
