My son is a current applicant to the USCGA class of 2015 with all of his materials submitted prior to the 10/15 early deadline. Yesterday we received an additional form from the Academy seeking body measurements and stating that there was a body mass index (BMI) guideline that must be met or the cadet would face disenrollment. While I see this as a standard part of the application process and not something to worry about given my son's physical conditioning and abilities he's VERY concerned that he might be in some sort of jeopardy due to his BMI being above the 27.5 figure stated on the form. My son's a two sport varsity athlete in track and football who trains year round. He's the starting center on our undefeated and soon to be conference champion football team and has really worked on his strength and technique to make himself the best possible player and he's in excellent overall shape. His PFE score was good, well above the acceptance standard for the end of swab summer. But he's still concerned about the BMI. My questions are these:
- Is the body measurement form a standard part of the application or was it directed to him due to his height/weight as listed on the PFE form?
- If the BMI is strictly enforced as a criteria for enrollment how do the larger/stronger football-type athletes comply?
My son is a strong, fit, and solid as a rock but may not meet the BMI and I'd hate to see the Academy exclude him for this one metric. Any thoughts or info you can provide with regard to this would be greatly appreciated!

It is not a standard part of the application, it was directed to him due to his being close to/over the limits on the height/weight chart.
