<p>I don't quite understand how to use these three formats for my common application essay. Other than the fact that I can use italicized to introduce a book title, I don't exactly know how to use it to emphasize my essay. </p>

<p>Except for a book title, you shouldn’t be using those in your essays anyway… it detracts from your writing – you want your words and thoughts to provide the emphasis and interest to the reader.</p>
<p>don’t use them unless you really think it’s going to benefit your writing. I didn’t use them at all.</p>
