Is anyone planning on attending the accepted students open house on Saturday? I was going to take my DD and she was supposed to stay over in dorms. Now having second thoughts in light of the bomb threats. I called the school yesterday and they said everything will still be held as planned. Any thoughts?

Thanks Awesome. But the Cleary Act doens’t require ENS notification or evacuation of buildings. Cleary’s purpose is to keep as public record reports of criminal acts. Typically that’s done by university’s in their crime reports. Pitt complies with Cleary by posting this:
[University of Pittsburgh - Police Departement](http://www.police.pitt.edu/statistics.php)
Again, there’s no legal requirement as to how Pitt notifies it students of anything. If they wanted to do it by simply posting on its website, that’s sufficient. Also, Cleary doesn’t require a university to evacuate buildings. Those are all policy decisions by the University.

And for inquiring minds, the Cleary Act can be located at subsection (f) [20 USC § 1092 - Institutional and financial assistance information for students | LII / Legal Information Institute](20 U.S. Code § 1092 - Institutional and financial assistance information for students | U.S. Code | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute)
A great place to start for information on campus security is on the US Dept. of Ed’s website
[Campus Security](<a href=“Campus Security”>Campus Security)

I’m very glad Pitt has instituted the alert policies and clearing of buildings. As to if simply posting on a website would adhere to the Cleary Act, I don’t think Pitt wants to run into a bunch of lawsuits if a bomb goes off or if a Va Tech happens, and it would. I think they must continue with the alerts and clearing of buildings.

Supposedly, the Chancellor of the University hung out with the students last night after they were evacuated from their dorms at 4am. Pretty cool move.

The US Attorney’s office also announced “potential suspects” and “significant progress” in the investigation. (see [here](http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/news/education/us-attorney-announces-potential-suspects-in-pitt-threats-630890/))

That’s very cool! I was sort of wondering, in a humorous fashion, if he responded to any postings of students offering their couches, and found a place to crash for the night.

We all hope this will end soon and the person responsible is caught and held accountable. A bright spot in this momentary dark cloud is the great job the students have done in rallying around one another, by offering fellow students (who happen to be strangers) some comfort with a place to stay. Also, the students’ support for the police and the k-9s is also incredible. For those who have posted in other threads that they are nervous about attending Pitt due to the current situation, I say the response of the students and staff to the threats is precisely the reason why they should attend Pitt. It truly is a community of people who care about one another.

Here’s an [article from the Trib about the Police, dogs, and students support for them](http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/s_790719.html).

If you don’t know who Krangle is, definitely go check him out, a large majority of the student body believes he has a lot to do with these threats. Also, check out reddit/r/pitt for more information about. Basically, Krangle was coming to Pittsburgh today to talk about the bomb threats, and then this happened. [Someone connected to Pitt bomb threats taken into custody,… | www.wpxi.com](http://www.wpxi.com/news/news/local/someone-connected-to-bomb-threat/nMXRH/)

Now we don’t know if this person is Krangle, but this is definitely some great progress, keep checking back on this article because they should be updating it.

Earlgrey-- I would suggest having your DD stay in the hotel with you just in case there happens to be a bomb threat. She will be able to stay in the dorms when she goes for Pitt Start (orientation) so there’s really no need to stay there now when the atmosphere wouldn’t be the norm.

Unfortunately, despite Krangle’s arrest, there were more threats and evacuations this past evening/morning and now it is really dampening my senior S’s spirits. He is to be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at the Union the day before graduation and is now saying he really doesn’t think we should visit/attend the ceremonies at all Certainly not what we thought his last 2 weeks at Pitt would be about. I hope this mess ends soon

This in my opinion is just one example of why Pitt is a great place. This is a link to a google doc with almost 200 offers of places to spend the night if you want to leave your dorm.

Let’s keep praying this ends soon!!!

Just appeared in the New York Times:
[University of Pittsburgh Police Make Arrest, but Bomb Threats Continue - NYTimes.com](<a href=“After Bomb Threats, University of Pittsburgh Police Make an Arrest - The New York Times”>After Bomb Threats, University of Pittsburgh Police Make an Arrest - The New York Times)

We were visiting Pitt today from NJ. My son is a prospective freshman for Sept 2013.
Hadn’t really heard too much about the bomb threats before we got there- but quickly learned about the situation.
Just wanted to tell parents of existing students…the vibe at the school was pretty upbeat. we didn’t feel all the fear that I’m reading about on these boards. I know if my son was there and I was 6 hours away in NJ, I’d feel very worried based on what I’m reading. But the students seem to be dealing with it. They’re inconvenienced and annoyed, but from what I saw, they’re doing OK. Hope it ends real soon.
Despite the situtation, we really like the school. It’s probably my son’s first choice and I think it’s a great place.

Prospective students should keep it in perspective like metadata’s son - chances are that during the next four years, nothing like this will happen. I’m pleased that the University and students are keeping as upbeat as possible and seem to be working together on this.

My brother (a junior) says that while everyone is really annoyed by all this, most people are keeping it together. Luckily, his apartment was only targeted once so far. One of his classes has gone to an online format for the last weeks of the term, and a seminar is being held at a prof’s house in North Oakland, with pizza brought in. Most of the time it’s business as usual.

My Mom sent brownies to the Pitt police department, got a nice e-mail back from the chief saying "Your son is one of my kids, I have 28k of them. "

Kudos to Kathy Humphrey- Dean of Students. I spoke to my son last night and his dorm had an open meeting with her Thursday to answer any questions/concerns. Apparently she’s been going to the Pete and hanging out with kids as they wait for their dorms to be cleared. I was very impressed with her at Freshman Convocation and I’m more impressed now!

Since nothing like this has happened in the previous 225 years of Pitt’s existence, that is a pretty safe bet.

That’s definitely the feel here. I just got back from a trip today and the weather is beautiful outside, and Bigelow Bash (including a free concert by Cobra Starship) went off without a hitch. Students are walking around, more proud of Pitt than ever, and camaraderie everyone has been showing is unbelievable.

I saw my DS and his friends today and they say it is slightly worrisome, more annoying but that it has made the campus more of a community. Everyone is reaching out to anyone who needs a place to stay.

IDs and bags are being checked at the buildings.

That being said they are also looking forward to the endof the semester in 2 weeks and hoping finals are not disrupted.

I live 7 hrs from campus, but I think the school is handling it as well as they can.

Hope you are right wgmcp, but this doesn’t necessarily follow logically. Already it seems as though there have been “copycats,” and now everyone knows it just takes one sick ticket to upset the lives of a whole campus of students.
Hope my son chooses Pitt, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned about the situation. He necessarily will need good grades both for full-tuition scholarship retention and for (he hopes) professional school, and who needs a distraction like this, with accompanying lack of sleep, during finals? In the back of my mind, I wonder: what if in three years this happened to his dorm the night before the MCAT?
My heart goes out to the Pitt students, who seem to be handling it well-- some even with heroic generosity (offers of couch surfing). I also feel for the administration, who seem to be handling as best they can.
Hope they find the perp soon. That would be satisfying for everyone.
