I'm surprised there's not a thread on this yet. Any ideas what was going on?

A prank.
Somebody did not prepare for a test and is going to go to jail for that.

Ya Ya - what is the source of your statement it was a prank by someone who is going to jail?

That’s my thought too. I hope they are caught and punished.

lisiatc

I don’t need any source, I had my own life experience with real bombs and real terrorists before I moved to US safety.

Terrorists don’t make any calls in advance unless they want money or some criminal/terrorist to be released from jail. And even if they call in advance they don’t tell WHERE they are going to put bombs.

It was a stupid prank and I can even guess what inspired it.

Just 4 days ago there was another idiot who pulled fire alarms all around UT campus, in 7 or 8 places.

About going to jail. Sorry for my ESL. Whoever did it when he is caught he is not going to be arrested for prank, he is going to be arrested for terrorism with all the consequences. Bye-bye UT, welcome to jail!

I understood what you meant, YaYa. This isn’t one of those times where you are protected by *67.

My daughter’s TA sent email yesterday about the bomb threat, asked if anyone needed counseling and mentioned that he had an event similar to this unfold during his freshman year. I believe he is a senior now. So it looks like it’s not the first time, and probably not the last.
I tried to find any news in Internet about UT evacuation in 2009 or 2010 but everything that pops up is about yesterday events. :(

The only relatively recent event of yesterday’s magnitude was in September, 2010 when a gunman shot rounds into the air running through campus and eventually committed suicide in the PCL.

UT has never had a mass evacuation in the past 25 years. I live and work near the campus and am very aware of what happens. They evacuate buildings, but not the whole campus.

Thank you, txex86. I believe this is what TA meant.

I never had any doubt that UT is a pretty safe campus except for public intoxication of minors. :D

I’ve been here for three years and bomb threats are pretty commonplace, just like they probably are at any big state university. I had a class in UTC first semester of freshman year and I’ll swear we had an evacuation every couple of weeks. But apparently campus-wide evacuations are extremely rare. Probably just some idiotic ECO304K student taking advantage of the tense situation in the Middle East, but meh, who knows. I feel safe enough here. I mean, UT-Austin is one of the biggest universities in the country, things are bound to happen from time to time…

My sister and I both lived in SRD one year (she was a freshman and I was a senior). As she walked out to our car, parked right behind the dorm, a guy wearing no pants or underwear jumped her. It was not even dark yet, just dusk. She screamed and the guy ran off. I remember the police coming to interview her for a long time. They never caught the creep. She didn’t live in SRD after that year, she was so spooked. This was in 1984!

My only scary incident was one year after finals, when most students had left campus. A “nice” guy at the Union offered to walk me home since it was dark. I naively said sure, and he forcefully tried to kiss me as we neared SRD. I told him I was not available, but he kept trying. Thank goodness some people showed up in the distance, and he scurried away. I was pretty shaken.

Never let down your guard.

good advice, ML

Is it me or is that really contradicting? haha

^ Haha, that’s what I was thinking. “People threaten to blow up the campus several times a semester, but meh, could be worse.”

Actually it explains why the evacuation messages were sent so late.

If UT gets all these empty threats so often they are used to follow certain procedures. They probably notify UTPD and FBI and wait for further instructions.
And this time for some reason unknown to me the threat was not considered “empty”, but FBI instructions to evacuate came pretty late, 75 minutes after the call.

It is sad that not FBI but UT administration is going to be blamed.

Though the evacuation itself was a complete fiasco.
