Bombed the ACT? Advice for next time

Gah! I did horrible on the ACT: 27

English: 29
Math: 28 (also didn't finish)
Reading: 28 ( Would have been higher if I finished...I got an 18/12)
Science: 22 (Ouch...yes I tanked science..)

I didn't finish reading, science or math..it was my first time!

I can take it a possible 3 more times...any suggestions? I know this is definately in the bottom 15% probably of admited applicants. I have a great GPA, Rank, EC's...how much will this affect chances? Could it keep me out of Pomona? I'm a junior so i have time to work on it.

Is it possible to get this up to 30 w/ some hard work?

Wow, you really have to self esteem. You should just go to community college.

That's not a horrible score...Eiether your very uninformed or you're just looking for a boost in your self esteem.

Actually at my School (IB School) Average scores are usually around 30-32. That is only for IB Candidates, but that is who I'm comparing myself against. So yes, I did below average for my school. And considering I'm in the top 10 in my class, I probably should have done better. Is it possible to improve my score up to 30?

Oh and I should add that my teacher suggested that I get a tutor for ACT because of my "disappointing" score. I'm thinking that my IB Class is just very competitive...but it isn't that great either.

That's really not that bad for a first score. What did you do to prep? I wouldn't freak out just yet. Get two books -- the real ACT book and Cracking the ACT -- and I'd bet your score would improve.

Uhh... it isn't a bad score (actually rather good) but if you want Pomona, it is. I havent taken the ACT but it would help to buy the prep books/courses if you so wish. Also, try your hand at the SAT. Good luck, and shame on you who comment that he's looking for a self esteem boost.

whats wrong with him wanting to improve? it doesnt show low sef esteem but rather high. he knows he can do better and wants to whats rong with tthat?

We never said there was something wrong with that. They way he said that it was a horrible score or that he bombed it when it's obvioulsy not and when he did not "bomb" it, is what's wrong.

I know exactly how you feel man. When I first took the ACT i pulled a 25 as I didn't finish a single section and got destroyed by reading. I just suggest taking a few practice tests and timing yourself with a stopwatch for each section. I did this and increased my score to a 30 with not a lot of work.

However, I still did poorly on reading because i just can't read that damn fast. If this is the case for you, i highly suggest the SAT. The SAT was much easier (time-wise) for me and I pulled the equivalent of a 32 on the SAT (M+CR). Good luck.

ill be taking a fee act at the pirnceton review on april 28th. hopefully this will tell me how i will do and what to study. also what books are recoomeneded?
