Book Awards?

Hey,

I've seen people list things like "book awards", like the Harvard Book Award or the Williams Book Award...

How do you even apply for these things? My school guidance counselors dont seem to know.

Thanks a lot

These are high school academic awards and you cannot apply for them.

icic, thanks

Apparently a college might contact your counselor and say they want to give out a book award. You pretty much have no idea when they will give out one. I got a Phi Beta kappa book award last year from my school, and had no idea they even had this award at my school. Your school pretty much chooses the best overall students (GPA, scores, community service, school activities, how teachers regard you).

vupreuss06: What's the Phi Beta kappa book award ? I got the Yale book award last year, but my friend told me that it doesn't even help my application to Yale...is this true?

I'm sure that it could help your application to yale. It certainly wouldn't hurt your application, so I think that it's worth putting it down.

okay...thanks for the advice!

My school gave out two book awards last year, the Harvard Book Award and the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award. It was given to the two best students overall with a large emphasis on academics. In my honest opinion, it affirms who should really be at the top of my school's rankings since we have grade inflation. It's like one person saying, "Haha, I'm ranked 2 and you're ranked 10," but then you get to go over the top and say, "I got the book award as being the top two best students, so what do you have to say about that." Sorry if I went on my ego run. I think what these merit awards does is it shows colleges how you compare to other students at your school despite the class ranking. It's actually a small award, but can pack a lot of meaning on how you are actually doing at your school
