Books and AOTC

I know you can include the cost of required books for the AOTC tax credit? My D’s school has a “textbook buyback” at the end of the semester and they paid her cash for some of her books. There is no receipt, just “cash in the pocket.” Should I reduce the price of the books in in my taxes to reflect the buyback? Also is the sales tax included in the price of the books?

I always used the price from the receipt when my daughter bought her books - that includes the state sales tax.

I never adjusted the cost for a book buy-back. She could have raised that much money by selling other stuff she wanted to get rid of.

Basically, you are selling back the used book to the bookstore. I don’t think you need to deduct that amount.
