This is a great book if you (or your kid) is not too far along in high school yet.

If you are looking for a book to identify colleges to attend, I recommend the Fiske Guide to Colleges. It has informative and interesting writeups on a lot of colleges.

Admission Matters by Springer et al.

You may be able to find it in your local library.

^^^^

Another vote for Admission Matters.

But, really, they all cover the same material pretty well.

I love intparent’s book, too. This book actually shows students how to try to unearth their interests and then pursue them deeply. It’s great for students in 10th grade and younger…much younger. By having deep and interesting experiences, it makes you more interesting as a person, makes you a rather “expert” in a particular narrow area, and thus makes you more desirable as an applicant to college.

This gets discussed a lot, check out these suggestions -

I love this book because it’s simple and helps parents and students be organized and thoughtful.

The Gatekeepers

Loren Pope: “Colleges that Change Lives,” and “Beyond the Ivies.”

Before rushing off to buy anything beyond Fiske or Princeton Review or the like, sit in a big bookstore and browse. Some of the books are more attention-getting for their authors than for being dead-on.

Agree with lookingforward.
That’s what I did in choosing my books. Browsed a lot of them first.

^Or check your public library, ours has several good admissions resources.
