Borderline applicant for top 30 schools, AP Lit?

My GPA is 3.91, 4.95 weighted
SAT's are 2180
My EC's are eh...

Basically I realize that I'm a borderline applicant for many of the top schools that I want to go to UCLA, UCB etc.. I've taken 4 AP's through junior year, and I PLAN on taking 4 more senior year. I signed up for AP Lit, but supposedly its pretty rigorous and you're assigned 4 books per quarter (16 the whole year).. Now I could see myself pushing my way through, but I dont want to go through all the potential troubles of the class and get a B to show for it, because I'm not the greatest writer or dedicated reader. Problem is... I've finished all the math courses in my school (BC Calc) and I'm not taking a language next year as I hate Japanese haha so I sort of want to compensate those missing classes by taking AP Lit.

So do you guys think its worth it to risk a B for a class that makes my borderline trasncript look slightly better? I'm SLIGHTLY leaning towards a no right now, but if an A in AP Lit will look better and help me get into some more colleges I'll probably take the risk senior year.

Thanks for the feedback!

And the other AP's I'll be taking are Chem, Physics, and Econ.

Yes, risk the B. Seriously, colleges would think better of you if you got a B in an AP class than if you got an A in a regular class. I guess it’ll be hard, but at least it shows you challenge yourself. Besides, if you took advanced English classes all three years already, would you really want to take a regular class in English? That would be like…practically a culture shock.

…Okay, maybe not, but take it.

I’m assuming that you’re in-state?

^ Nope out of state, and I’ve been taking honors for 3 years in a row. This would be the 4th straight year if I didnt take AP.

Out of state would make things even harder then.

But if you’re going to take English Honors instead of English AP, I think that’s fine.
