Bored USC Student answering your questions (business & accounting double major)

I’m filling out my housing application, and I saw that you were in New/North- I’m just confused because New and North seem to separated into different residential halls. Are they all pretty much the same?

Im still waiting for the big letter. Hopefully, it comes this weekend. I interviewed with Tiffany and we got along great and we have kept in touch over the past year through email. How much does that count?

You must not be in WRIT 140 this semester. (:

Hi Boreduscstudent, I am a parent of a recently accepted freshman son at USC. He has applied for Engineering (Not received the letter yet but his screen has the information about his acceptance so I am hoping he did get accepted into Engineering).

My question is about Computer Engineering at USC, do you know anyone there and are they happy with the program. We are internationals (U.S Citizen living abroad) so which dorm would be the best for son?

We are visiting next week and have registered for their tour, you think that is enough? Would they show the dorms on the tour?

Lastly, how is the faculty reputation at Engineering?

Thanks!!

Hi boreduscstudent,

Which major is more competitive for freshman admission; Accounting or Business Admin?

Does USC extend undeclared/undecided freshman admission, despite the applicant listing Accounting or Business Admin as their intended major?

How difficult is it to change one’s major to Accounting or Business Admin? What’s involved?

Does Leventhal or Marshall offer freshman Spring admission?

New/North is the same exact thing. Basically it is one building with a line painted along the wall in the middle. One side is New and the other side is North. Hope that answers your question.

werty1992:

Hope you got the response you wanted from USC. I do not know how much having a great relationship with Tiffany will do for your application. I am sure it cannot hurt you though and can only help you because Tiffany is the head of Marshall admissions.

CaptainKurtz:

Nope, took Writ 140 my first year. If you think Writ 140 sucks wait until you take Writ 340. haha.

The engineering program at USC is one of the nation’s premier programs in my opinion. I have many engineering friends ranging from civil, petroleum, electrical, mechanical, and computer who are all happy they chose engineering. They also have GREAT jobs with a GREAT salary now that they are about to graduate. As mentioned before, I would highly recommend a dorm central to campus (New/North, Birnkrant, Marks, Pardee, etc…) Parkside is another option because most of the international students seem to choose parkside every year, but I would try to break the mold if possible. I do not think they show you dorms during the campus tour, but mainly tell you about the many options. I would recommend asking the students to let you into the dorms and walking around the dorms/hallway yourself to get a feel of the atmosphere and to get a look at the dorm room. Lastly, the faculty reputation in the engineering school is top-tier. I am sure if you go to the engineering site, they will have more information regarding the expertise and knowledge of the faculty.

I believe Accounting and Business Administration admission is the same. That is because technically to get into Leventhal, because Leventhal is under Marshall, you are applying through Marshall into Leventhal if that makes sense. Therefore, as for which is more competitive, there really is no right answer.

I know that USC will consider a applicant for general admission into USC if they do not get into Marshall. I have heard this from the admission office and marshall admission counselors.

If you are not in Marshall and wish to change majors and transfer into the Marshall school, you have to take certain courses and maintain a 3.0 or above in those courses to transfer. It is a little harder than other majors to transfer into, because it isn’t merely just filling out a piece of paper, but you do have to take a couple required courses than fill our transfer paperwork. Leventhal and Marshall do offer freshmen spring admission to the best of my knowledge.

congrats to everybody getting in to USC. hopefully, all of you accept because I will guarantee that you will not regret it and will have the best 4 years of your life.

if any of you have any questions, even if it does not pertain to business and accounting feel free to ask away.

Got into CLAS and really looking to double major. Just wondering if I can double major within two schools such as CLAS and Roski?

Thanks in advance.

owtneerg:

congrats again on your acceptance. USC is very accepting to students wishing to double major and actually encourages every student to at least minor in something else. Just a word of advice when planning on double majoring, as soon as you get to USC sit down with your academic adviser and ask if a double major is possible and to chart your 4 year course plan. The academic advisers are more than willing to talk to you about your goals and will map out all the classes you need to take and in which semester to work towards your goals of double majoring or minoring. Do it early on and not when you are a 2nd year or later if you want to graduate in 4 years.

OK. I have one. What do you know about the Thematic Option Honors Program?
D got an invitation, I’m sure she isn’t at the top of their list, but nonetheless I need some info from an insider. Thanks.

I got into USC Marshall and am still deciding whether to attend or not. I have a few questions:

1) What are job opportunities like for USC Marshall students/graduates? I know Marshall is a great school but people don’t seem to know it’s name like they know Berkeley or Stanford. Let me clarify, I’m NOT at all saying that Marshall isn’t as good as these schools, I’m just saying it doesn’t seem to have that brand name. That’s why I’m wondering about job opportunities.

2) Do you think a major in only business is a wise decision? I hear from a lot of people that it’s better to have a technical degree of some sort for undergrad, and to back that up with an MBA. I know for sure I’m going for an MBA, so what do you think about majoring in business only undergrad?

3) If I decide to double major, I’m thinking of double majoring in engineering and business. Is that possible? Will USC let me do that? Is the workload manageable? Could you tell me about Viterbi School of Engineering (ranking, how the programs are, etc.)?

4) Someone might have asked this already, but I didn’t look through all the posts. How safe is USC? I hear a lot of rumors about it “being in the ghetto” and being very unsafe. Of course, these are rumors. What’s your opinion on this?

These are very detailed questions, so thanks for taking the time to read and answer them!

Hello, boreduscstudent,

My daughter has applied to USC. It is her one and only choice. She has fantastic ec, placing in State for science fair (hosted by usc), doing research with Dr. Dubeau at Keck many many speech and debate awards, going to state for s&d next month I believe, hospital volunteer, aps, honors, nhs, president of several clubs. She is first generation college, of two immigrant naturalized citizens (england and middle east). She has taken all the tours, interviewed, applied early and kept in touch. She I believe would be a great fit for USC. We both like the people, both students and faculty. Everyone is very professional, unline ucla. In other words, we are both absolutely sick to our stomachs not knowing what’s happening. Not sleeping, not concentrating. She’s ‘forwarded for committee review’ as are so many others. Maybe you could just cheer me up a little … that’s if you’re not too bored …

Is it possible to double major in accounting AND film production? - will the school allow this, and is success achievable for the student?

boreduscstudent:

Thanks for your time and effort in answering students and parents’ questions! I have a few to add, if however you already answered them before, then I apologize for repeating them…

1) How does the AP credit work at USC and particularly at Marshall (Accounting)?
2) My son will have nine AP credits (Calc BC, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, English literature, US history, US Gov, Marco Eco and European history) plus linear algebra and multi-variable calculus, what does this mean to his freshman class schedule?
3) How can he choose classes offered at another school?
4) What are the required classes for Accounting major? Is there a list of course catalog that we can browse online now?
5) If he decides to try to play at the USC orchestra, does he need to audition? Who should he contact?

Thanks again!

Hey there, hope you don’t mind me butting in here and answering a few questions, boreduscstudent.

to midwestDad2:

 1. Check out this page of the official word: [USC ARR : Articulation : Advanced Placement Exams](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/apexams.html)
 2. This likely means that your son may be able to skip lower level math classes, and since he also took European history, he may have his GE category 1 class waived. This also means that he’s going to come in with a whole bunch of credits already, which means he will be able to register sooner than people who have fewer credits than he does.
 3. I’m not sure what you mean here. D you mean taking classes at another school concurrently with attending USC?
 4. Here is the course catalog section on accounting: http://www.usc.edu/dept/publications/cat2009/private/pdf/2009_10/Accounting_09.pdf</a>
 5. There are many ensembles in the Thornton school, and some of them are meant specifically for non-majors. I have several non music major friends in Concert Orchestra, which is open to everyone with no audition required. To play there, all you’d need to do is sign up for the class. As for audition ensembles such as the USC Symphony, you should contact the Thornton School of Music directly and inquire there. I’m sure that it’s not a very intricate process.

I just wanna say this is sooo helpful to people like us considering Marshall.

Also, Im from the NYC metropolitan area and Im planning on double majoring in finance and mathematics. Do you know if USC has connections for summer internships in NYC? Have you ever heard of this happening?

Just wondering are all of the fast food places that are across from USC on I think Figueroa OK for students to go to even at night or should these be avoided?

cdr,

In addition to dining halls and some spots on campus the brand new student center is opening this fall. There will be a full service restaurant, California Pizza Kitchen and Lemonade (casual eating) and others to be named.

Thanks for that info Georgia but it doesn’t rly answer my question I was just wondering if those places are safe to go to because they are really just across the street from campus and are not very far.

They are definitely safe to go to at night, but you’d probably be better off to bring a friend, just in case. The streets are very well lit and cop cars are always patrolling the area as well as USC hired security officers so you should be very safe for the most part.
