I was looking at Boston College’s language requirements and noticed that it recommends four years of foreign language. It also says that any coursework in 8th grade will not be counted. I took Spanish Level One in 7th and 8th grades and they appear on my transcript. I also took Spanish Level One 1 in 9th and 10th grades. I also took Mandarin Chinese in 8th, 9th and 10th, and 11th grades. I did not continue with foreign languages in senior year so that I could take some courses that I found more interesting. I feel that I more than meet the requirement but any thought on how Boston College admissions would view this?

I am in a similar situation… I took Spanish I in 7th grade, Spanish II in 8th grade, and Spanish III Honors in 9th grade. I hope this is still considered as 3 years of foreign language!

the lack of senior year FL will not keep you out of BC; should you get denied, that will not be the reason.

Good luck.

@singmetosleep15, I really don’t think that counts as 3 years of Foreign Language. I think it counts as 1 year. You might make it count as 2 years having made it to Spanish 3, but there is no way that will count as 3 years. Our HS would consider it one year and most colleges require 2, so it would be a problem.

@singmetosleep15 It is really bad form to hijack another person’s thread. You have asked the question elsewhere already.

I don’t know a thing about your HS, but I would be willing to bet big dollars that HS Span 3 is HS Span 3 as far as “most” colleges are concerned.

btw: BC has an online placement test for matriculants. (Foreign Language is a graduation requirement for A&S.)

That is nice, but 2 years is 2 years as far a “most” colleges are concerned. If it was different, it would say something like “up through 2nd year of a foreign language.”

Boston College is very odd. I know a friend’s kid that was recruited this summer for track, really smart kid and would have been one of BC’s fastest 400 meter runners. When they pre-read him, admissions criticized the fact he took “only” three years of Spanish. Let’s face it, foreign language is a blow-off course in high school. This particular kid was going to graduate with 5 years of English, 4 years of Lab Science and 5 years of Math, mix of Honors and AP and they were concerned about Spanish class?
