Boston U vs. Cal Poly SLO

I’m having a tough time deciding between Boston University and Cal Poly SLO (and UC Davis but I’m waitlisted). Each of them have their pros and cons, so none of them really stand out. I am looking to major in biology, mainly the ecology & conservation bio track, with an end goal of doing research and working at somewhere like NOAA. I am also interested in environmental science and marine science, as well as computer science. Cost isn’t necessarily a concern, but FWIW BU is more expensive by 10K max (might be less) plus airfare and a winter wardrobe (I live in California).

PROS
At BU, I really like the academic flexibility in being able to pursue courses I like, double major/minor, and still graduate in 4 years. They have a lot of research opportunities since they’re a large research university, and I like the special programs like the Marine Semester and study abroad opportunities in France and Ecuador specifically for my major. I love Boston and I’m excited to explore the city, as well as the diverse student body. I also like the weather and am excited for 4 seasons.

Cal Poly is in an awesome location and I love nature and hikes and the beach. It’s much closer to my home than BU, which is another plus. I really like their learn by doing approach and their focus on undergrads, which might make getting involved in research easier. Their bio program seems strong and they have their own pier, which is exciting for research opportunities. Also, I like the traditional campus and the college town of SLO.

CONS
My major con about BU is the distance. I’m pretty close with my family and I’m worried I’m going to have a hard time adjusting. I also won’t be able to come home for Thanksgiving, which is kinda sad. I’m not a huge fan of the campus (a little too nontraditional for me) and I’m not to sure about how easy it will be to get research with such a large graduate program.

Cal Poly’s inflexibility with my major is my biggest concern. I know that changing majors isn’t impossible and it’s not like I want to switch into engineering but I’m concerned I might not be able to if I decide to. I’m also concerned about not graduating in 4 years, especially if I do have to change my major. Lastly, and least importantly, a lot of people from my hs go there and I would prefer to go somewhere by myself.

Overall, both schools are very different which makes it hard because I’m not sure which environment I’d prefer. In terms of academics, does one school strongly outperform the other in biology? Is it worth it financially to go to BU? I feel like college is the best time to try something new and live elsewhere, which is why I’m drawn to BU, but I know Cal Poly will give me a quality education as well. Lastly, I really like UC Davis too. If I were to get off the waitlist, is its bio program better over my other options?

Sorry this is so long & thanks in advance!

Have you visited both?

Did you receive merit aid from BU? What is the Cost of Attendance of each?

If the delta really is $10k/yr, will your parents be able to pick that up? (you can’t borrow more than the federal limits.)

@albertsax Yes I have. I liked Cal Poly’s better but didn’t dislike either.

@bluebayou No, need based. My parents are able to cover either tuition, just I wouldn’t want to spend more if I didn’t need to. They want me to choose whichever school is the best fit.

What did you decide?

@airway1 Cal Poly SLO! It really came down to the fact that it was cheaper and closer to home. Except I just got off the waitlist at UC Davis but I’m probably not going to go.

@piedanger great news! Good luck!
