Hi,

Just wondering how reputable bu's music performance (voice) program is. i'm thinking of trasnferring there. like, say, is it as competitive as northwestern?

thank you so much.;

BU has a great performance program. I don't know about voice, but I do know (if it's any help) that their bass progam is absolutely one of the top in the country! I think they have excellent performance faculty all around, the school's in a great area for music, and is part of a university so you could take classes in other parts of BU if you wanted to.

For voice, I would say Northwestern is somewhat more competitive for the simple reason that BU's voice department is larger (too large, in fact; over twenty freshmen entered BU as vocal performance majors in each of the last two years). As for the quality of the program, with that many singers, it's not going to be uniform, but there are several world-class teachers and a healthy number of world-class students there. The post-graduate Opera Institute attracts phenomenal talent and has recent alumni in all the major opera houses. That said, there are some teachers you want to avoid there, and a couple of the studios turn out quite weak graduates.
If you can get in to a good studio there, you'll receive a very good education.

I have to correct my own numbers. Over twenty freshman vocalists entered the School of Music at BU in each of the last two years, but a significant percentage of each group was music education majors.

My daughter is a soprano and is considering BU for undergrad. Any suggestions on teachers she should take a sample lesson with? What studios are the better ones?
Thanks!

I've heard wonderful things about Penny. Best of Luck!
