Both Parents unemployed; will it affect college admissions

My mother got laid off today. She was the only breadwinner of the family, so now both of my parents are unemployed. And so far I have submitted my UC and USC apps. Question is, will changing my mother's occupation status in my application raise my admission chances since now I come from a disadvantaged background (Not just for UCs and USC but other need-blind universities/college as well)? And should I change it? Pros and Cons?

Personal Info- CC transfer, Asian/Chinese, GPA 3.5

It’s coming a little late but yes, change it. There are NO cons to explaining a situation as it arises. That’s definitely personal crisis because now you have a case for hardship. College’s love that… I dunno where people are getting this disadvantaged people have lower odds of acceptance myth. Please note: When I say that I mean disadvantaged people who are still pulling pretty decent grades. Obviously a severely lower GPA or related issues would affect admission… but if you’re looking at a 3.5 who is rich and a 3.5 who is poor, or even middle-class, they all 3 have an equal opportunity to get in.

Bump?
Would you guys consider this an advantage in college admissions?

Also none of my essays were about coming from a disadvantage background.

And lastly, I read that a wealthy/well-off background might actually hurt you in the admission process. Since my mom was a VP of a Bank prior to her termination.

lol @ you thinking this makes you “disadvantaged”… notsureifsrs.

Your mother, as a VP of a bank, made probably $130K+/year.

brb my mom makes more in 1 year than real disadvantaged families make in 4 or 5 years.

You really think this will affect your application? It won’t. They won’t feel sorry for you and the shouldn’t. Your mom will probably find another job before admissions even come out so quit trying to scavenge for a handout.

If you do get accepted, it won’t be due to your ex-VP mother losing her job.

For the UCs your “low income” status is determined using projected 2010 income, so your mom losing her job now is not going to do much for you to gain advantage for admission.

You will, however, need to file a request to get your financial aid package reevaluated once you are admitted.
