boutique IB or research at sales/trading/research firm?

Hi guys, as my title asks which one would be better for my senior year job search for either an IB, consulting, or asset managmement job?

Either

1) An internship at a boutique tech I-bank in San Francisco, which pays about $1000 a month.

or

2) A research internship at a fixed income Sales/trading/research firm (not IB) in NYC - unpaid but with a possible trip to China later in the internship. This job would require me to call up companies in China/Taiwan.

Which one would you take?

Pay shouldn't be a concern when dealing with summer internships (or even entry-level jobs, for that matter). What you should be concerned about is the firm's reputation, the group's reputation, the responsibilities you'll be given, and opportunity for advancement.

In both cases, the only thing we know about is the salary. So any advice anyone will give you will be essentially useless.

well job two sounds like just cold calling, so I'd go for the first one

Pay should be very important, because the important firms do pay, if they dont pay they arent as well established. Also if you dont have a lot of money then pay should be important, banking is based on money and people only go into it for the money, to say its irrelavant makes no sense.

You don't know what you're talking about if you think that pay at an entry-level position is important. You'll only be working that entry-level position for two or three years. What's important is the pay and opportunities for the 30 years you'll be working afterwards.

To reiterate to the OP: the only thing we know about the jobs is how much they pay. From that information alone, nobody can give you good advice.
