Bowdoin better than Brown

oh pleeeeze…let’s not get uptight about a little criticism. thank you jason (aka melodymaker) for the reply. as already said…i know brown is a great university. i can list a thousand things positive about it. and again…we’re splitting hairs between two great institutions. i just want to know the replies to the notions floating about the web. and if i was on bowdoin’s forum…i would be playiing devil’s advocate. so pleeeze…just answer to the misconceptions as you see it

ok…most of you have answered lingering doubts/conceptions/questions. thank you wolfmanjack, melodymaker, mgscinc, thewarmheart, chsowlflax17 and pb2002 for taking the time to respond. i realize i’m only a high school senior, have never attended school in the usa…so thank you for the little bit of patience. i am leaning toward brown…i know that may be disconcerting for a few of you. once again, thank you

Just be careful about playing devil’s advocate - sometimes it helps to make it clear what you’re doing ahead of time.

Also, try to avoid what I call Fox News Argumentation (you’ll understand the reference when you get to the states). For example, “we’re splitting hairs between two great institutions” sounds very neutral, but it’s actually pretty loaded.

Finally, I get the sense that perhaps some of your comments here don’t quite reflect who you really are. We can all be pretty different from our normal selves in the online world. If you’re the kind of person who will thrive at Brown, which you very well might be, I think it would be great if you ended up attending. As someone who was applying from abroad, I’m sympathetic to how hard it can be. If you have any other questions, let me know by PM.

What mgcsinc said: if you PM me with a specific question, (for you pre-frosh lurkers, that goes for you, too), I’ll try to respond, given all the other things I’m juggling. Posting questions in the forum is great when they’re specific, or something we can comment on. I’m always glad to answer things like what classes I’ve enjoyed, what things I would have done differently about freshman year (can’t comment about later years, as I’m a freshman this year), etc. I love Brown, and want everyone for whom this would make a great home to come here, too.

Bowdoin and Brown are both great schools. My son was accepted at both, but Bowdoin got crossed off the list because it offered no financial aid. Fortunately, Brown (and some other LACs) were much more generous.

I too am willing to give a perspective on the first couple years at Brown from my (unique) angle to anyone if you PM me. I too am relatively busy, though, so there’s only so much I can write in a day. I’m content with Brown (although I can’t comment too much on its social life)

why can’t you comment on its social life?

I haven’t really taken part in the social life. I don’t go to parties, really don’t hang out with people except at meals, and spend most of my time in my room. I know little enough about it that my accounts would essentially be second-hand information.
