Brandeis, Oberlin, Skidmore, Muhlenberg

Hello theatre/drama experts,
I always hear how great the Northwestern & Brown B.A. programs are. I know they're not in the same league, but can anyone comment on the programs I've mentioned in the thread title.
Thanks!

Brandeis, Skidmore and Muhlenberg are EXCELLENT BA programs for Theater and would be on any list of mine for a strong student who wants to go into theater.

Oberlin is a wonderful school as well but not one I think of readily for Theater (more for music) but that doesn’t mean it would not be a fine place to study theater either. But the other three would come to my mind for very strong theater before Oberlin.

If your student has any interest in Musical Theater opportunities…these are pretty strong at Muhlenberg and Brandeis. Skidmore doesn’t have MT classes or MT shows, but they have student run musicals every year (though their straight drama program is top notch). I have no idea if that is even an interest but I added that just in case.

Of Brandeis, Muhlenberg, and Skidmore, Brandeis is more selective, but all three are fine options.

PS…as an example, I have an advisee from last year who just started at Northwestern for Theater and she applied and got into Brandeis and Skidmore which were BA options on her list (she also got into some BFAs for MT but chose Northwestern).

Just FYI. It requires more hours than most BA’s, and they consider it a sort of preprofessional program for theater like pre-law and pre-med. Anyway, that’s what their departmental publicity says.

FWIW, D1’s freshman roommate at Oberlin was an English/ theater major, when I asked she said she was very happy with the program, there were numerous performance opportunities, and she had availed herself of same.

Does anyone know how extensive the performance opportunities are at Muhlenberg for a normal-good (not star) actor? Particularly in musical theater. Are there enough productions so lots of kids can get involved?

There’s a girl from our town who’s just like you describe and she’s done very well for herself - she’s a sophomore this year and is in two or three student productions (don’t let that fool you) and in an Improv group. She’s very happy.

Thanks, amtc! It seems like a really strong contender for her.
