Does anyone have any information on how well the university supports their undergraduate students in finding internships? Specifically interested in Political Science related internships, but in general, all input would help.

From what I know, because Brandeis is a smaller school, it offers more opportunities for internships for each student. I read in a brandeis catalog that the average student from Brandeis graduates with 3 internships under his or her belt. It also offers a lot of internships as part of the curriculum, so that students can get credits. I don’t know about pol. sci. specifically, but I’m sure internships shouldn’t be hard to find if you look for them.

I think Hiatt, the career services office, does a fairly good job. They have drop in hours that you can always go to to have your resume checked or get general advice. They have listings online of internships, but it can depend on where you are located as to how helpful those are. I’m not exactly a politics concentrator, but I was able to find a pretty journalism internship through them last year that I think has helped for graduate school. Sometimes things you also find about things listed there through other avenues - I know one thing that’s been sent out from some of my professors recently was an opportunity at the press office of Governor Deval Patrick. I think this past year there have also been two informational events regarding government employment in addition to other info sessions. There’s also the World of Work program, the main point of which is to support students who have already found internships, but this year they started a special program for social justice type internships that had already been selected - if I had not been a graduating senior, I probably would have applied for one of those opportunities ([Louis D. Here’s a general link about internship opportunities:

Plus there’s the new Justice Brandeis Semester program which offers an opportunity in criminal law and the possibility to cover the Massachusetts election as well as a summer program in The Hague:

We have had a very positive experience with internships at Brandeis. My s is a physics/math major and was offered a summer internship for the summer following his freshman year, which in most universities is unheard of. He could have worked in the lab during his sophmore year but due to his work load choose not to. He was again offered another internship this summer. Both of these are internships involve helping very well respected professors with research. My s says he is guaranteed another internship next year (going into his senior year) as he will be working on his senior thesis. All of his offers came very timely so he was able to secure housing. Last year it was financially feasible to live on campus in the Mods, but since Brandeis raised the rent this summer by almost 100% he will be living off campus.
