breaking into management consulting

I just spoke to a recruiter from McKinsey and he said that you need a very high GPA and some sick stuff to even be considered from a non target undergrad. He also said I pretty much won't get an internship if I'm not from Harvard/Stanford/Yale.

I only have a 3.8 as an engineering major, and hold a few office positions in clubs. However, I don't have anything spectacular on my resume. I might get published for research but thats a maybe.

Do I have any chance of getting into bain, bcg, mcckinsey and the like out of undergrad??

It is extremely competitive, but they certainly hire from more target schools than than those named above and also look for people with valuable expertise of areas they have interest in. If you had your internship in an unusual and fast growing niche, they’d look at you from ost schools.
