british student needs help!!

ok so i really want to go to yale. what do you think my chances are

grades:
1 A*
7 A's
4 B's
1 C

all of my a's, a*'s and most b's were taken at the correct time. the rest of my grades are lower because i took the exams early, most 2 years early. the rule of thumb here is that for every year early taken i would have gotten a grade higher if taken at ther right time.

e.c's
ice skating-level 5-4 years (will be 5 years when i apply
self taught guitar same time length as skating
student council age 10-16, governors award age 14
student ambassador age 16-18
volunteering age 16-18-local charity store

my big problem is that my mother is unemployed, does this hurt my chances? she cant work because she is disabled, she held a job through all her life and only recently had to give it up

i cant decide what to write for my essay, i have 2 people who inspire me, which would be better to write about
-winston churchill
-my great grandmother-ordinary life but very inspiring for various qualities

i have booked my sat for june 2011, i will study for sat subject tests over the summer then take them in the autumn before i apply.

anything else i need to think about?

This will be very difficult to assess. Only a few posters will be able to evaluate UK exam scores and your taking them early complicates the interpretation even more. (Fortunately Yale’s admission office will by more savvy.) That your SAT scores are not yet available makes the task nearly impossible.

For your interpretation, here are stats from one UK Yale admit and four Harvard UK/Hong Kong applicants (Harvard will have about the same standards as Yale):

Your mother’s unemployment won’t matter. Yale is need-blind for international students.

I assume that those are your GCSE marks? If so those are pretty good, but there will be people with many A*'s and only a couple of A’s. However, they do not put you out of contention by any means.

When are you applying btw? I assume next year and that you are in lower 6th at the moment? If so, and if you plan to write AS exams in this year, try and get a full house of A’s there which will make your school report look very impressive. Since A levels are far far higher than the SAT subject tests with a bit of work on the subject matter, but more just work on the TYPE and WORDING of the questions you should be able ot get some really high marks there. For the General SAT, just practice practice practice. A good mark there will mean that your grades are fine.

The EC’s are pretty slim though, but from what you say about your mothers unemployment I assume that you have not had too many opportunities and so they will take that into account. As for the commonapp essay, write about yourself or something that has happened to you. Perhaps link to these other things, but focus on YOURSELF.

Hope this helps.

Yes those are my gcse marks, I’m targeted c’s for a level but I will get 3 a’s I can practically garuntee it!
I am applying this autumn, with regards to my extras I knwo there isn’t much there but I took every chance I was given.
I’m a little lost on what to write the essay about, I have some thoughts though and I’m sure it will all come together  thanks for both of your replies they were sooo helpful!
