Broken laptop- can AU help?

My S is a Freshman at AU- so far so good, (he’s loving it), except that he now has a major problem with his laptop, which won’t charge. Unfortunately this was a problem he had before he left in August, but after Dell sent someone to look at it and provided a new part, it was working. I’m not sure if it has been dropped…the details I’m getting are kind of sketchy…:); whatever it is we need to call Dell.

My S is very worried about being without his laptop for who knows how long while it’s getting fixed…I’m sure he has all his information saved on a USB drive, but my question is this- do AU lend laptops to students on a short-term basis in situations like this? Or rent?

Any suggestions or info greatly appreciated- thanks!

I don’t know for sure but when I asked about laptops, at the AU Summit, I was told they help with software issues and not hardware issues. However, my son (who goes to a different school) had a roommate two years ago who had a problem with his Dell. He sent the laptop to them and had it back fixed in less than a week. I know a week is a long time but he may not have a choice and all things considered, it is pretty quick. Your son can use the library computers until then. Hope he gets a quick response to the problem.

D was without her laptop for about 10 days last year while Apple repaired it. No loaner from AU, but she made do using the school’s computers and borrowing her roommate’s. Her biggest issue was not having access to stuff she had failed to save on her nice, unopened flash drive. She learned it’s possible to live one’s life without checking Facebook multiple times each day. Who knew?

Thanks MommaJ and NewJerseyMom.

I did just speak to my S who said that he can manage by borrowing someone’s battery, borrowing a friend’s laptop for a short period as well as using the library computers…so it’s not an insurmountable problem- just a very inconvenient one. If dell can fix it and have it back to him in a week, that would be terrific. He thinks a week’s too long to manage but I suspect he’ll surprise himself, and maybe he’ll put his laptop away when goes out, after this experience! At least he’s saved his work on his flash drives.
Live and learn, right?!
