Brooklyn/NYC Trip - Food/Activities/See's and Do's

To celebrate D’s May DOT (doc of OT) graduation she and I are spending 5-6 days in Brooklyn/NYC later in May.

My brother and family live in Brooklyn and we will see them some and they will be part-time guides but we will have a good bit of time on our own. We have an AIRBNB in Park Slope near Prospect Park.

We aren’t actually wanting to spend a lot of time in Manhattan. We may spend one day and do one museum, Central Park but we are really more interested in the boroughs - Brooklyn specifically though we may explore others w/family.

We have a list of food places started (bakeries and bread/bagels first line of business…) but would love some suggestions of other “should do’s” especially in Brooklyn. We don’t mind a visit to a museum or two but hours in one would not be our thing. The Botanical Gardens is on our list. We love outdoor things - parks, walking along water, etc.

Also any recommended apps to download for subway purposes would be good to know.

I’ve been to this pre-Covid but for now it’s marked as temporarily closed:

I’ve also been to this. Felt very “Brooklyn” but I know a lot of other cities have similar things now.

Not in Brooklyn but Little Island (the newest park to open- during Covid- built out over a pier on the Hudson River) is gorgeous and worth the trip on the day you spend in Manhattan.

Brooklyn Bridge Park? What type of cuisine are you interested in exploring?

This is my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn-- I had never had Ethiopian before:

I have been on several food tours with Foods of New York and love them. Not inexpensive but worth it (and you get fed!).

Here is one in Brooklyn:

I love the Botanic Garden!

Friends have recommended the Brooklyn Navy Yard bicycle tours by Turnstile Tours. Looks like they have lots of other offerings that would be of interest to you https://turnstiletours.com/

My D and friends just did Little Island and the High Line the other day. She said The Edge in Hudson Yards was pretty cool, too.

The Brooklyn Museum has some great collections. If you like art museums, I’d definitely visit.
The Judy Chicago Dinner Party installation from 1975 is there.

You’re a runner right, @abasket ? Run the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s fun! There are nice routes where you do BB in one direction and a different bridge to return from Manhattan. And of course Prospect Park is great for running!

I found the Transit Museum to be really fascinating: https://www.nytransitmuseum.org/

If you like gardens, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is worth a vist.

Brooklyn Bridge park is great for walking or running with great views of lower Manhattan. And walking over the bridge is fun.

Enjoy!

Why do I have some memory of there being a notable ice cream place at one end of the Brooklyn Bridge???
