Brother is a Prof at UNC, we live OOS, should my son get a letter of rec from him?

My brother (my son’s uncle) is a prof at UNC. We live OOS, in NY. He is a good student, 4/0/4.0 GPA. 34 ACT and good ECs. Its so tough OOS, thinking of any advantage.
He is applying EA.
Thoughts?

No. A family member is not an unbiased recommendation.

@newyorkmumof2boys We wondered the same thing. My sister has a high level position in the industry to which my daughter aspires, and she has written a recommendation that speaks to the characteristics that my daughter possesses that are required for success in the industry. I did not see anything on the UNC website requesting such a recommendation nor did we hear about it in the information session. That said the common application section for UNC does allow you to identify “other recommenders” including a family member. Thoughts?

Again, family recommendations are discounted due to potential bias, real or imagined.

He is going to get great references from unbiased people who know him (such as teachers and GC).
