Brown civil engineering vs. applied math

I put civil engineering as my intended major in my application and applied math as the second choice. But after getting accepted I was informed that applied math is the best major Brown has to offer and the engineering department is rather mediocre compared to those of the other elite schools. Should I change my major?

Well… what do you want to do after you graduate?

undecided… I guess I’m more interested in civil engineering but also enthralled by math. Majoring in applied math will probably get me into a better grad school

Majoring in applied math will get you into a better graduate applied math program. Majoring in civil engineering will get you into a better graduate civil engineering program.

Isn’t Brown pretty flexible when it comes to majors anyway? In terms of requirements?

If you want an engineering job afterwards, you’ll have to do an engineering major. Applied math is interesting (I feel your pain, I had to decide between physics and engineering) but you won’t be able to do engineering afterwards, especially not civil, which is really regulated and you need the appropriate licenses.

Evidently, if you want to work as an engineer, you will need a degree in that field. if you want a broad choice of careers, I would take maths with computing in a joint honours option.
