**Brown Class of 2020 RD applicant thread**

@veryhappygirl123 March 31st.

March 31 @veryhappygirl123

@tuty143 okay yay! Haha but I can type out my whole stats later on my computer if you really want but here’s a condensed version.
1900 SAT
3.82 UW 4.34 W
No subject tests
AP : Human geography(4), US History(4), English Language(5), English Lit, Microeconomics
Extracurricular: volunteer work w a self defense like boxing studio, volunteer at homeless shelters, and work w my Native American tribe, I was on the school volleyball team freshman year
Essays: I only had 2 of my closest friends read over them and they didn’t really give me any feedback. I have moved a lot so wrote about how that has shaped me as a person and helped me find my identity. And my others focused a lot on my heritage. My dad is Native American and grew up in Rhode Island and I have family there. I have always lived on the west coast (currently Malibu, ca) and so I wrote how like going to school at brown would allow me to return to my heritage.
Interview: It went really well. The guy was part of the class of like 1970 or something like that so he was older, but really took the time to get to know me and even followed up after for a couple of additional facts he forgot. He actually called me after I got my letter And congratulated me. He said he has been doing interviews for 10-15 years and never has had someone he interviewed get one. He also mentioned he didn’t hear anything about the other 16 students he interviewed.
Reaction: I was extremely surprised due to my own grades and just profile compared to others who apply to the Ivy’s. I believe I got one due to my heritage and the fact that the tribe I am registered with is one of the founding tribes of Providence. I’m pretty sure I won’t get into any other Ivy’s (I applied to Harvard, Penn and i know it doesn’t technically count but Stanford) because of my SAT score. I plan on studying business and/or international relations.

@jorjimarie congrats!!! I envy your current feeling of relief.

@jorjimarie don’t discount yourself! (I do that all the time too it sucks) I think everything you’ve done is really amazing. Congrats! Hope to see you next year!

I had a dream that I got a likely, then I woke up and was really sad  I’m really not expecting one, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have been really nice! Congrats everyone on your likeies, and here’s hoping the rest of us will get equally good news in 22 days!

@mjstewart1224 thanks lol I’m sure you will get good news soon! Good luck (:

@tuty143 thank you haha but what other schools were/are you considering

@jorjimarie a few more ivies (Harvard, Yale, UPenn, Princeton) and then Stanford, Georgetown, BC, Northwestern, UChicago and I believe that’s it. For now most of them I am no longer considering because Brown was one of my top choices, which will make my decision a bit easier.

I don’t know how accurate the 300 LLs number is, but it almost certainly includes recruited athletes (because ivy league recruiting works differently than other D1 conferences and the LL is the only way for the ivy league to stay competitive in recruiting where other schools can offer firm acceptances earlier). For non recruited athletes, it definitely is true that 90-95% of the accepted students that will never receive a LL from Brown. CC is a completely unrepresentative sampling of applicants.

There are about 200 recruited athletes, and the majority get likely letters in the fall. About 8-9 years ago, Brown started experimenting with likely letters in March for non-athletes. Since they are still sending these out, I assume the program was a success (which means that likely letter recipients matriculated at higher-than-average rates). I vaguely recall there being 200 of these academic likely letters, but that was several years ago and I haven’t heard an update.

ETA: But yes, the vast majority of accepted students do NOT get a likely letter.

If we assume it’s still ~200, 1970 RD acceptances were mailed last year so I guess saying ~90% don’t get a LL is more accurate than 90-95%.

@jorjimarie - Congrats! You are going back to your roots? Good for you. After 4/1/16 nobody will care if your SAT was 1500 or 2400, you are a Brownie… that’s all it counts. Good luck and enjoy the experience… you are going to one of the best Universities in the world!

@yalebound2020 haha so true , just waiting until that day lol. But thank you! I’ve never lived back there but I just meant going back to my roots as in that’s where my heritage is

For financial aid, do we get like an estimated package with an official acceptance ?

Wow, reading this thread, you all are so impressive! It’s honestly a little intimidating. Congrats to all who’ve received LLs - I’d just be thrilled by a waitlist on the 31st!

@mattyhan SAME! I’m shooting for a waitlist so that I’ll have a small glimmer of hope for a lucky, eventual acceptance

I think it’s fine if you don’t have amazing stats or extracurriculars. Imo better to focus on whether or not they fit into the context of who u are and such. if that makes sense

Hey guys, I just received an email from the financial aid office asking me for my financial aid docs. I don’t mean to speculate, but could that have a positive connotation to it or what.

I didn’t :frowning: but maybe because I’ve turned them in already?

Probably not. If you haven’t already submitted your documents, they would naturally request them. Brown is need blind, so theoretically the admissions office doesn’t talk to the financial aid office. Brown requests financial aid documents from every student who applies for it. Most of us have already submitted all the necessary things.

Don’t read into it - it has nothing to do with admissions.
