Brown essay help!

hey guys i’m applying to brown and i’m confused by their long essay-
are we supposed to write to the 5000 character limit or follow the 500 word limit given on the paper application?

also, does anyone have any suggestions on how to approach the activities list document?

thanks!

i'm also curious if it's considered acceptable to just include a list with your activities and time commitments

i second stu64k's question....

holy crap
i just registered
this is my first post
and i was going to ask davidskim1234's EXACT same question
and even scarier:
MY NAME IS DAVID KIM

That IS scary....;(

keep that multilpe personalities tied up man

i would say that then the 500 word limit is pretty flexible. make sure u dont go way over 500 even if it's below 5000 characters. 700 words should be max.

yea, I second the above. Mine was about 650 (oops) but I really couldn't cut it down any more without diluting it. As for the activities/awards, I formatted mine (I applied ED) as a series of charts; one for ECs, one for volunteering, etc etc. For each chart, I listed the name of the activity, hours involved, description, or any other information pertinent to that particular subject.

So if we can cut it down to 500 words, should we do so? I have my Common App essay, which is exactly 500 words, and my 600-word essay doesn't really add much in terms of content. However, it does flow a whole lot better. Also, the 600-word essay is still only around 3200 characters. Hence, should I submit the 500-word essay to keep in line with the paper app guideline or should I submit the longer but more stylistic 600-word essay that doesn't violate the online app guideline?

I would go with the 600-word one, if you really feel like it flows better and sounds better.

so will they totally kill me for 772 words--i can't edit out any more
