Brown PLME vs. Princeton

If you truly want to become a doctor, choose the PLME program. As a current Princeton student, I can personally tell you that the grade deflation here is a huge turn off. Most of the premeds I know hate it here as they are so concerned about their grades. In fact, I knew around 20 people who said they wanted to be a premed in the beginning of their freshman year; of those people, only 8 want to continue with it. Most said it was due to grades but a few said their interests had changed.

At Brown you can easily get a ~3.7 with some effort (the median GPA is 3.6), my friend is a premed there and is loving it (not PLME though). At Princeton, a B+ average in the science classes requires a lot of effort; grade deflation makes an A- or A quite elusive. Most top med schools accept people with GPAs > 3.7, they don’t really care about our grade deflation policy. Sure people with ~3.3 averages from Princeton do indeed get into med school, but they’re definitely not top notch med schools. Now, whether attending a top notch med school makes a difference is a different discussion.

However, if you are only moderately interested in medicine and decide to change paths, Princeton will open up more doors for you. Career wise, getting into management consulting or I-banking is pretty common here–Brown isn’t a tier 1 target school for top bulge bracket banks. Also, we have excellent programs in computer science, engineering, and physics; although notoriously difficult, they truly are some of the best.

In short, if you are certain you want to be a doctor and want to enjoy your 4 years, choose the PLME program. If you want to work your a$$ off with slightly better career prospects, come to Princeton.

Haha, you assume training to be a doctor wouldn’t entail working your “a$$” off.

Also, maybe your premed friends are just dumb. Just like you, for responding to a thread that’s almost a year old.
