From looking back at past threads, I’ve pretty much found an agreement that the majority of people at Brown are very accepting of homosexuals. After visiting and noticing the friendly and open environment, that makes perfect sense.

This doesn’t neccessarily mean that there are more gays at Brown than say, any other American univeristy. So I was wondering, for those who are/were at Brown…is there a larger proportion of gays than normal? Is it commonplace to bump into someone gay, and did you, or are most people quiet and closeted (not that there’s anything wrong with that)?

I hope I worded this okay and did not offend anyone, but am just curious as I am gay and will attend next year and was curious.

I’ve been told by gay friends that their guess is that anywhere from 20 to 30 percent of the guys on campus swung that way. How accurate it is I have no idea but, it is, for sure, a sizable number with a vocal and visible presence on campus.

I don’t know how to quantify the size of the gay community, but I would consider it “sizable”, at least for men. It’d be impossible to go through Brown and only know one or two gay people.

fredmurtz is probably right on those numbers.

There are a lot of out people around that you can just tell are gay. There are others who are out and you can’t tell are gay I’m guessing. I see gay people every day, ones I know and don’t know.

You know Medestmelody… I always assumed you were a female, with the first name melody… then I read that post, so had to go to your profile and saw the gender male. Wow, learn something new everyday. haha

This stack of mixtapes brings me closer
and I know that it’s a modest melody
that set you out to find the perfect guy
but found you crashing into me

A good friend of mine goes by “stackofmixtapes” and I go by “modestmelody” online. I wish that were swapped.

I’m a bit surprised at the guesses to that high of percentage of gays at Brown (isn’t Yale supposed to have a large population), but Brown is surely a friendly place if you are gay. My daughter is straight, but joined the Gay Alliance her freshman year since she is from San Francisco, so naturally we have tons of gay friends.

All I know is, if I get into Brown, the first day I get there, after I put all my stuff in my dorm, I’m gonna run around campus looking for modestmelody, and thank him for everything.

I swear, his dedication alone makes me want to go to Brown. It’s like, no matter what form it’ll be in, if anyone uses the word “Brown”, he’ll have something highly profound to say about the place. Who isn’t amazed by such dedication?
