Brown, Tufts, Wellesley, Oberlin, or Uconn?

Hi!

I was very lucky to get into so many fantastic schools but it makes it so hard to decide where to go. I want to study bio, I’m especially interested in genetics and human bio and I’m planning on going premed. I also really want to do research in college. I’m a gymnast and it would be nice to continue doing club gymnastics in college, which I could do at Wellesley, Uconn, and potentially brown but it’s not a deciding factor.

I am very liberal and interested in social activism and want a school that would support and foster that. Probably hand in hand with this is an open minded and friendly, collaborative student body. Also preferably not incredibly preppy.

I’m Muslim but I’m really into interfaith stuff and would appreciate a school that has a strong muslim students association and/or interfaith program. Also being Muslim I don’t drink, so I’d like to go to a school where I can have a social life without having to drink.

Regarding size, I like the medium size of brown and tufts, but smaller isn’t awful. I like active participation in classes and I don’t know how well I would do in 400 person lectures, although I know this isn’t exactly avoidable especially as a premed.

Another thing, it would be good for me to go to a school with strong mental health support services, I’ve struggled with mental illness in the past and a school with a more positive/less stressed environment along with support services would probably be best for me.

I’d be on financial aid anywhere I go, and they’re all about the same amount of money besides Uconn, which is cheaper.

So! I really like Brown because of its open curriculum, I like the idea of taking whatever I want. The campus is also beautiful and people seem really nice.

I like tufts because people seem quirky but socially aware and active. Tufts also has a lot of interfaith stuff and a Muslim house that I’d be interested in living in. Its proximity to Boston is another plus. I also got the Neubauer scholarship, so my student loans would be replaced by grants and I would get a research stipend which is pretty cool

I’ve visited Wellesley and it was gorgeous. The girls were so nice and it seemed like it would be really easy to make friends. There are also so many research opportunities in Cambridge/Boston through MIT. Wellesley also has a really student Muslim students association and an interfaith council that would be really cool to do. The only drawback is the all girls thing, I’m not sure if I want that for college.

I live in Connecticut, so oberlin (in Ohio) is really far away. I don’t necessarily want to have to fly to college. It’s also a bit too hippy for me, but I appreciate the dedication to social activism, especially racial justice. The main draw about oberlin though is that I got a significant merit scholarship. My mom got a new job and is going to get paid more so my grant is going to go down for other schools, but this scholarship wouldn’t get taken away.

Uconn is where my parents want me to go because it’s cheaper. I got a full tuition scholarship but I would still have to pay for room and board. It’s a great school and I got into the honors program which opens up a lot of opportunities. Uconn also has a lot of research opportunities. I also have a ton of Ap and ece credits, so I could go into Uconn with sophomore or junior standing, which would give me better options for housing and course registration. My only thing is that Uconn is huge and I’m worried that I would be overwhelmed and lost.

If you have read all of this is applaud you (sorry it’s so long). Does anyone have any advice/opinions/comments about any of these schools or my choices? Thanks so much in advance!!

First of all, congratulations on your college acceptance success. You have some very nice choices. You can’t really go wrong with any of them.

What is the price difference between UConn and your other choices (which you say are all more or less the same cost to you)? If the price difference is swingable, I’d choose any one of the privates over UConn, which is a perfectly serviceable public uni but it’s not a Michigan or a Berkeley, and it will not offer the same level of opportunities or attention that any of your other choices will, even if you are in the Honors Program. However, if the amount of money is really significant, then UConn would be fine.

It seems like you are really attracted to Tufts, for good reasons. Maybe that is where you should go.

I’m a Wellesley fan (an alum and my D goes there now) but you have to be okay with the single sex aspect.

How much will it cost you to go to Brown and Tufts? Those are the top 2 contenders in my opinion, @hbrown3

D’s college counselor said that the biggest reason students transfer after the first year of college is that it was too far from home. Oberlin might not be your best choice for that reason.

However, if money is the chief factor, between Oberlin and UConn I think you might be happier at Oberlin.
