I was admitted to both NYU & Brown (Boston U, BC & Northeastern as well) but I received the best financial aid from nyu and brown. I wish to major in Biology to later pursue an education in medicine. Right now I’m extremely confused in terms of which school to attend to so I’ll be visiting both next week.

While Brown has the prestige of being in the Ivy League, it is in a very small town. Being from Puerto Rico, social scene is very important for me since I pretty much go out every weekend and hang out at local bars or clubs. I don’t know much about the party scene in Brown…
On the other hand, NYU has the advantage of being in a major city (and my favorite one) and has a thriving party scene. I also have close family there which was a very important factor to me when I was applying to different schools.

Opinions of students at these two schools will be greatly appreciated :)
P.S.: Both schools are great and I’d be happy to attend either one but I’m trying to get a better perspective on the issue. Thank you for your time.

I would go with Brown. Although big city-kids might think Providence is small, there’s more to explore past College Hill. And Boston and NYC are a cheap train/bus ride away, and I’m sure you’ll meet people that will want to explore these cities with you.

Both would be good for premed, but all my friends at NYU complain about their super large classes, and for some these didn’t dwindle down till junior year. The only people that I know with smaller classes early on are in Tisch and Steinhardt. NYU’s pretty big, so you have to be alright with being pretty independent for 4 years. I’m not saying that people aren’t nice, but there won’t be a lot of hand-holding (same at Brown though!). You’re a small fish in a big pond, and might not always feel a sense of community with your peers. If these things are important to you, then I’d consider Brown over NYU.

Premed won’t be a walk in the park at either school though, so you should take a lot of consideration into fit. Which environment would you rather be in?

Thanks for the insight. Appreciate it.
Are you currently attending Brown?
And I chose Brown, btw. While the big city life is fun, I can’t see myself calling new york my home, but that’s just me. And the fact that Providence provides a “tighter knit” community than NYU is pretty comforting.

I’m not currently attending, but I was accepted for fall 2010, and I have lots of friends and family that went there in the past, so I’ve grown to love the place and no problem!

Visit both, and when you do, drive around in Providence and compare it to NYC.

You said NYC is your favorite. If you go to NYU, you will be there. On the other hand, if you go to Brown, you can move to NYC after you graduate.

I am Brown '74 (grad in '78). I loved Providence because NYC is too big for me. Brown has a very good record of getting students into med school; visit that part of the website. Also visit the corresponding places on NYUs site. When you visit the schools, ask that question.

You mention you have family in NY–if it is really important, NY might be the place for you. The vibe of the two cities is very different so if this matters greatly, I wd say go to NYU.
