My D is considerring Bryn Mawr and Haverford. She would like to pursue vocal perfromance opportunities while not necessarilly majoring in music. I understand the program is run by Prof. Lloyd at Haverford. Does anyone know anything about the program or whether it makes sense to be at Haverford rather than Bryn Mawr if the head of the bi college program is there? Also, does the music department play any role in helping with admission at either school if the music supplement with the application meets with his/her approval? (cross posted on BMC website).

The AdCom at HC does look at special talents... athletic, artistic, leadership, life experiences... in the framework of solid academic performance... like any college or university. Congrats if your daughter has one of those special factors. One of my friends who worked in the admissions office after college for a few years said that applicants with special talents get color-coded flags stuck to their applications. I believe music professors, like coaches, can submit a "wish list".

Your daughter should martriculate at whatever college she feels she will spend the majority of her time and feels the most comfortable.

I am curious whether the msic prof at Haverford can flag only applicants to Haverford or whether he can also flag applicants at Bryn Mawr since the music program is a joint one. Anyone know the answer?

How about if your daughter gets in contact with Prof Lloyd (e-mail) and sends a perfomance tape? She can get a sense as to her abilities from any responses. Once a relationship is established, and she knows HC or BMC is her college of interest, she can tactfully ask about the admissions process and possible support she can get from the Music Department.

It really makes a + impression if students are pro-active. Just tell your daughter to remember that the professors who choose to teach at HC are a self-selected bunch and choose to do so because they love scholarship, teaching and getting to know students on a personal level. 1/2 of faculty live on campus. These professors want talented and ambitious students to come to HC as it makes their job interesting and fulfilling. Many of them also have kids who were/are/will be in college as well so they can relate to applicant anxiety.

Thanks--already in the works.
