Bryn Mawr or Northeastern?

Hii!!!

I’m currently struggling, like many other high school seniors, on where to go for college. Currently, my top two choices are Bryn Mawr and Northeastern for biology/biochem respectively. I’m also pre med, so going to a school where I can not ony get a good GPA, be well prepared for the MCAT (I really don’t wanna do a gap year to study :frowning: ), and have resources to get internships and shadowing, ect.

I did go to visit both schools, and I truly fell in love with both, and for different reasons. I know the Northeastern is very famous for its Co-op program, and it also has the resources for me to get internships, shadowing, and volunteer work very easily, but it has no set pre-med program. Bryn Mawr does, but because its outside the city, it is less accessible. I also do not know if itll be as easy as it is in Northeastern to get those internships and the like.

The co-ed/all women’s doesn’t bother me… Bryn Mawr lets us take courses at Haverford and Swarthmore, so I should be good

I also have a 16k scholarship from Northeastern, which makes a price difference of about 20k ish per year, all expenses included.

Any input you have will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks so Much!!

Congrats on 2 great choices!

If the money is a significant factor for your family, choose Northeastern.

I am a fan of Bryn Mawr, however. Philadelphia is very accessible to Bryn Mawr. Just hop on the commuter train which is a few minutes walk away from campus and you’ll be n Philly in 15-20 minutes.

Bryn Mawr/Haverford Bi-Co can provide research and internship opportunities. Ask Bryn Mawr more about what some students have done. Don’t hesitate to reach out to either of your options with questions to get clarity. They want you to accept and should be very willing to explain opportunities and options.

I have always heard that a “pre-med major” is NOT necessary for admittance to medical school. So I would not let that be a mark against Northeastern. My niece is a junior at Northeastern and absolutely loves it. She went in undecided and chose finance as her major. She is in her coop this spring with a top Boston hedge fund and loves it, and the company wants her back for another coop and has pretty much guaranteed her a job offer. Boston has so many great opportunities in the health and biotech fields too. I think it would be a great choice for you.

At Bryn Mawr, you don’t major in pre-med. They just offer pre-med advising so that students are better prepared for the application process in terms of coursework, etc.

But a quick google search shows that Northeastern offers something similar: http://www.northeastern.edu/prehealth/

I would suggest that @thesmartone23 looks at both advising offices closely to see how robust they are. Some good advising certainly can be very helpful, especially if the poster doesn’t want to spend an extra year on the process. Also, compare success rates on getting into med school from each place.

Overall fit and other academic interests are important to consider. Many students start off with med school in mind. Many change their mind during their college years for various reasons.

Lastly, perhaps the $20k savings per year could come in handy for med school costs.
