We had one deferral for ED1 (a reach school - SmallFry’s top choice) and one EA acceptance (a likely school) with a decent amount of merit money (a total surprise). Even though the acceptance was SmallFry’s least favorite school on the list it is sure looking a lot more shiny now with the $. We are very glad to have a perfectly ok worst case scenario. Strategizing about the next round now. SmallFry wants to ED 2 at a school that is a supereach in the grounds that it is the only school that SmallFry would choose without hesitation over the ED1 school. However, I think if we are going to do ED2 it should be for a school more reach than super reach - like the ones SmallFry strongly considered for ED1 - since ED gives such a huge advantage (or is it less so for ED2?) and is more likely to lead to an acceptance. I guess I understand that SmallFry doesn’t want to risk being bound to ED2 school if SmallFry might get into ED1 school on RD round.
For RD we will also throw in a few “might as well try” schools that havent been on the list until now as long as they are common app and there is no additional writing.
@CaliMex google > urban dictionary says : A term initially used to describe the devastatingly effective batting line up of the 1927 New York Yankees; now the phrase is commonly used more broadly to refer to any particularly successful and/or powerful group of people.
I guess those are very selective, highly desirable schools known to reject most of the applicants.
Daughter got EA acceptance to instate flagship honors college today and small merit $- that’s all they offer for instate applicants it appears. Nice to have a positive result in hand though.
Congrats @vegas1! SmallFry is still waiting on a couple more EA applications. One is supposed to come out by the end of this month and one by the end of next month. The wait is torture!
I had never heard of Colorado College before, but it seems to be on everyone’s lips these days. And Syracuse seems to be enjoying a surge in popularity, too? Any theories?
Congrats, @vegas1 … must be a relief to have the first acceptance in hand!
Colorado College has been on a lot of people’s lips for quite a while in many zip codes! Similar “social vibe” as Bates, which is to say “a little of this, a little of that”, leans a little crunchy/outdoorsy but not to the point that a more preppy/mainstream kid would turn tail. What really sets it apart is that you take only one class at a time which tends to be ideal for certain types of experiential learning. (It’s not the only place that does this, but it’s probably the most well known.)
Jan Plan all year long! Not so great for some disciplines. Ime, this is one of those places that really excites a certain kind of kid.
And… Syracuse is popular with kids at our school who want a rah rah sports school that’s big but not ginormous. (Interesting, more personal alternative to Penn State and Rutgers for kids in our neck of the woods.) A little more pre-professional than most private schools. Good STEM. DS has a couple of friends there who are really happy with it - I think the student body is pretty diverse.
I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I was hoping that SmallFry would be completely done before the new year, but at least we have submitted everything due 1/1, which is the majority of the apps. We still have a couple of schools with 1/15 due dates to clean up and finalize, but I think we can get them done before SmallFry goes back to school. When that final app is in, I think a very tall milkshake will be in order (mostly for me).
Hope everyone is making good progress and has a happy and safe New Year.
SmallFry has gotten emails from a few LAC’s encouraging SmallFry to switch from regular decision to ED2. Are these form emails that everyone gets or are they targeted?
@Frydaddy This is not the definitive answer, but from what I am hearing/reading I think they are not targeted.
I think it isall about about increasing yield and managing yield. “Desirable” colleges are getting more and more apps every year and it becomes harder for them to estimated yield/enrollment. ED1 and ED2 helps with this. Also, of course, yield helps with some of the ranking systems!
Finally finished the senior yearbook ad and those nagging financial aid loose ends. Spent hours looking through old photos for the right photo and had a nice little trip down memory lane. I realized with digital photos over the years, we don’t have enough printed out to enjoy.
Ah, the senior ad, @vegas1. I’d forgotten all about that! We had such fun putting that together, and our son was really touched by it. Good memories. You’ve had ten years at Exeter; enjoy all these “last” moments. We reminded our son before he returned after the holidays for those final months to try to be as mindful and in the moment as possible before he said goodbye to Choate so he could pull those high school memories out to savor them years down the road. I had a similar phone conversation with him last week as he’s getting ready to say goodbye to college. Man, it goes so fast. Bittersweet.
Yes, it was sweet and sad going through the photos. Unlike with S1, nearly all photos of S2 are digital. I agree that I need to print them or get photobooks made.
4 months till graduation!
