Congrats to your child, @vegas1. Impressive results on the reaches and far reaches.
Congrats!
Outstanding! Congrats, @vegas1!
Yeah, @vegas1 !
Fantastic @vegas1! The ball is in vegaskid’s court again!
Thanks everyone! Wish her friends had as many options. It wasn’t a great year for admissions overall. She seems to have a clear front runner - but will be doing a few overnight revisits to confirm. Hope fellow CC 19’s have a lot of great options to!
Last decision is in and she has another acceptance (reach school). This will make it very difficult as her sister attends this school
and loves it there. Sister graduates in December and as our youngest daughter is really young (turns 17 after graduation) it would be nice to have her sister around first semester.
It’s been an interesting year being on the other side of the admissions rollercoaster. We have learned many lessons after going through 5 rounds previously (son took gap year and daughter transferred). She met with her CC yesterday who was literally surprised by her results ( couldn’t hide it according to my daughter). She shared she thinks that the authenticity of our daughters application made all the difference. Our daughter wrote her essay in a diary form about an experience she had and wouldn’t listen to any advice or feedback from us on it. She actually wouldn’t let me read the final version, because she didn’t want my feedback. Really have no idea how she is going to decide between her top 3. I know it is a great problem to have though- so just going to support her through the decision making process. We all know ultimately she can’t make a bad choice.
@vegas1, congratulations to your daughter! With all the stress and pressure about college, it’s nice to see hard work pay off and that apparently her character has come through. Best wishes for her decision and the future.
Congratulations @vegas1 - that’s fantastic!
Our last 3 ended up with two more acceptances and one WL.
Grand total:
4 rejections (2 far reach and 2 reach),
4 waitlists (2 reach, 1 low reach/high match, and 1 match)
7 acceptances (1 reach, 3 low reach/high match, and 3 safeties/likely)
Of our acceptances, 4 are serious contenders, and I am not ready to place any bets on where we are going to land. 3 of the 4 revisit days are in a row so it’s going to be a busy week that week! Already I’m seeing that two of the schools are going to be a pain in the rear to get to.
I can’t wait for all of this to be done and decided – but I’m relieved I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Congratulations @Frydaddy! I also can’t wait for the admission process to be over. We have 3 back to back revisits as well - thank gosh 2 are in driving distance. Good luck to your family as you make the final decision. It is nice for our kids to be the ones in the drivers seat at this stage of the game. Very empowering after what feels like a lottery in the initial phase.
Congrats@vegas1 and @Frydaddy ! Thank you to everyone for sharing results- very helpful as we are just starting visits and it was a glum admissions season at Chimneykid’s school so far this year vs last year which went really well. Graduating class is only about 30 students and last year’s class had acceptances to Oberlin, WIlliams, Barnard, Bowdoin, Skidmore, BU, Syracuse… a very good haul for a tiny alternative school with no AP, IB or honors (or recruited athletes and most kids receive FA). This year’s senior class is not as strong but several kids have only been accepted at essentially their safety schools. I’m just curious if any other 2019 parents felt it was tougher this year than last overall?
Congratulations, @Frydaddy !
@chemmchimney , I don’t know about class results, but I am hearing a lot of grumbling from friend-parents of 2019 graduates, especially around acceptances at unaffordable schools. I do wonder sometimes if a “good” year raises expectations so that disappointment is inevitable although I tend to think it’s more likely, as you note, the variability between classes.
When the dust settled most of my daughters friends ended up with an acceptance they were happy with. Her friend group had offers from and will most likely attend: Tufts, Johns Hopkins, Hamilton, U Chicago, Stanford, Middlebury, Brown and Northeastern. The challenge is with these high achievers many of these amazing schools were not their first choices.
Our daughters CC did say it has been a less then stellar year for admissions. I have heard that the class of 2019 was not the “best class” for years now- this goes back to middle school days. Not sure why or if that is true.
I was just about to bump this thread to check in with the Class of 2019 to see how everyone’s college results went…thanks to those who have shared their kid’s experiences and best of luck to them in making a final decision over next few weeks.
Quick update here. Headed off shortly for revisit #2. She was only interested in visiting the 2 ivies she was admitted to. We have done this rerevisit thing before with 3 kids, but those programs were one day and primarily focused on academics, clubs etc. Have to say the 1st revisit this time was totally different. This school started as our daughters clear second choice school and by the time we left she was in love with the school. The program included stating over night with hosts in dorms and lots of fun cool activities late into the evening for the kids. Our daughter loved the people she met and is already communicating with many of them.
After loooking at the program for school #2, it looks like a similar schedule. Jam packed with interesting opportunities to get to know the school and potential classmates. Hopefully she will have a clear choice after this trip. We know she will be happy at either, so it really is her decision. She got the FA playing field leveled by asking one to reconsider their offer to be more similar to the others - which they did.
One interesting note from the first visit, she is now back to reconsidering a gap year. She turns 17 this summer and her host for the revisit had been in a similar circumstance. She shared she had taken a gap year and thought it had been a great decision for her. So we will see how she feels after revisit 2.
^^Most schools have upped their revisit games. And it does make a difference.
Looking forward to hearing how it all shakes out on the gap year. Great spot to be in!
Prepx3D just got back from a revisit last week and had a great time. Sat in on a few classes, got to speak to people on campus about her activities and met with some folks about her areas of academic interest. Had a good overnight with current students and came back even more excited about attending!
My wife and I had a few very minor moments of worrying beforehand because she had been accepted ED and is definitely attending, and we were just hoping that the revisit would confirm her love for the school and that a poor revisit day would not have made her question the decision.
We probably worry too much about things…
Well the first decision is made. Daughter did not click at all at visit #2. Really felt the school lacked the community vibe of school #1. She felt like it focused exclusively on the individual and this came through in so many ways. After further reflection the open curriculum felt more like a burden then privilege, as she likes structure and routine. She thought she would always be asking herself if she was taking the right classes or wishing she could take more classes. Very clear first choice and she committed yesterday. Go Big Green.
^^and a great orientation program to boot!
@vegas1, go Big Green indeed! I have a son there, in his first year. If your daughter does end up doing a gap year, one nice thing is that Dartmouth tries to put gap year kids with roommates for first year who also did gap years. My son didn’t know that ahead of time, but really appreciated that his roommate also had a year off — doing something very different than what my son did, but still it felt like they were a good match because they were a bit more mature, etc.
