BS -> MEng At The Same School? Thoughts?

Hi, I'm currently going to complete by B.S. in Electrical Engineering at a decent state school in New York (SUNY - Binghamton University). I might be able to complete a Masters of Engineering in 1 year, after my BSEE. Masters of Engineering is geared towards engineers who want to go to industry, therefore does not involve research/thesis.

Should I get my MS at my undergrad school, or apply elsewhere? To be honest, if it takes more than a year, I'm not very interested. My ultimate goal is an MBA later on, but should I stay at my current school or apply elsewhere? If I stay here, I might be able to complete within 1 year, but if I go to another school (for ex, a better one), it'll take two years.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very interested in engineering (math, science, etc...), but I would want to move up into management sooner or later, or perhaps become a consultant (which will take years of experience, which I am aware of).

I'm predicting two internships before I graduate with my BS, a 3.2-3.4 overall GPA (EE/CS GPA will be highier), many leadership positions throughout college, etc...

Your thoughts?

You want to think about what the MSEE will get you in terms of the job market. Is it normally a credential for the kind of jobs you're interested in? What is the bump in starting salary the MS provides? The various engineering professional societies' websites will have information on this sort of thing.

It sounds like you're interested in the management side so another factor will be whether the type of positions open to a new BSEE can lead to the management track and how long it will take. If, for example, a new MSEE will go directly into project management and a BSEE needs several years of experience before being eligible, then spending a year now on the MSEE is likely worth while.

Good luck!
