We are looking for a nurturing school with strong academics. We applied to some of the big names but in retrospect should have focused on a broader range of lesser known/mid-tier schools. We are at a huge disadvantage now in the FA department but hoping miracles happen somewhere
I went to an all girls BS and loved it, but both of our DDs are adamantly opposed to the idea sadly.
I think you should maybe take a look at George School.
Have you tried Millbrook? Beautiful campus, great academics, great community, also, they have a zoo on campus!
I have an idea. If you can get into Indian Mountain then they go through 9th grade, your child can then go through the admissions process a second time. If this is appealing their phone number is (435) 480-0871. Indian Mountain is a wonderful school and Iām sure your kid would love it.
i agrƩe that JBS is a fantastic option. this way they can go to the best fit school for 10th grade or repeat 9th.
Have you looked at Dublin School?
I recall someone here last year who had very positive things to say about it.
Thanks, everyone. Right now weāre working on scrounging up a potential one year FP, and in the meantime weāll run this list by our head of school to see what she thinks and/or if she can help at all.
best of luck.
Westover is looking good with space and FA if we can only convince DD to attend an all girls schoolā¦
use the WISE program to your advantage. Maybe @mondaydevil has good Westover info. Theyāre going to be a new sophomore in September!
Yep! @Calliemomofgirls has a thread on the benefits of all-girls schools as well. Thatās what made me love the idea of an all-girls school, so maybe you should have your DD check it out!
awwww @mondaydevil Iām happy to share any part of your journey with you! I canāt wait to see how much you love Westover! It felt very homey when we visited.
@pbdarcy
Feel free to reach out if I can answer any questions as a fellow parent who went through the app cycle last year and this year with two different kids. Also, we considered very closely both all girls and co-ed schools, so have some background in that comparison. Westover is definitely one to try for late admissions and FA. Also, Chatham Hall might be another. We ended up choosing another school for my DD3, but honestly, I think she would have had wonderful experiences at either of those! They are truly hidden gems in my opinion. Another late app option ā maybe George School. (I donāt have any intell on whether they are acceptance applications, but I do love them and they always seems so reasonable and open-minded. I adore the GS folks!). Fountain Valley might also be a co-ed option, but thatās in Colorado so Iām not sure that would work for you.
One thing to think about though is your plan to scrape together tuition money for one year ā just be sure the school knows that is the plan because the admissions decisions are usually attached to being FA/FP. Iām guessing what you are saying is that you would call schools and say something like: āIf your FA funds are already allocated for this year, we could cover that gap for now, but we would want to be admitted as an FA student for future years.ā (If you just went ahead and applied as a FP candidate now, you may well NOT be able to switch for next year. They will likely count on you being FP forever, barring some major unforeseen change.)
Thanks so much! We have one local BS here in FL who allowed us to do FP one year and be considered for aid next year. I realize that isnāt the norm, so weāre grateful theyāre flexible.
My DH is probably going to see Westover this weekend with DD. I went to a different all girls school in CT and am a huge proponent of single sex schools, especially in their ability to strengthen self confidence and nurture young women. Fingers crossed
Thanks so much! Iām glad to know youāll be there next yearā¦ Iāll keep you posted!
@pbdarcy - my daughter is a Sophomore at Westover now. PM me if you have any specific questions!
Wonderful! Thanks so much!
I will second @Calliemomofgirls suggestion of Fountain Valley School. DD absolutely loved the community and vibe there. It was a very strong contender for us, although we chose another school (ha, same as Calliemom). But it definitely deserves a strong look!
While for the vast majority the deadlines may have passed, you can still apply to certain schools. Before wasting time and energy, communicate and ask if they are still āopenā to considering your application.
Nothing is impossible. Now if you had your heart set on one schoolā¦that is a different issue.
My son is on a few WL (our error as being too narrow originally). He is now going one by one and to be honest, it is a much calmer and relaxed process. Admissions no longer have 1,000 names thrown at them.
Schools have no obligation to go to the WL. If they get a very good applicant in April and they have space, they will consider it.
Just make sure you do have a school set in the fall already!
This is true.
