Hey everyone. I’m really interested in Accounting and i want to do something related to that in my life. I also really like cooking and i do want to open my own restaurant and become a chef someday. So i was wondering is a bsc in accounts better than a bsc in culinary arts? Like would an accounting degree help me keep my options open later on? Andd is it a good thing to have a bachelors degree in accounting and then do a 2 year masters in culinary arts?
Thank you!
An accounting degree does open some career options to you. More important, you can use the skills you learn to help you when you’re running your business. I don’t know if you necessarily need an accounting degree just for that though. Do you want to pursue a career in a restaurant right away or did you want to do something mostly accounting-related first?
@DmitriR Well, I always wanted to open my own restaurant, but if thats not possible i would like to become an accountant. So i’m not sure which field is best to start of with. I have some cooking knowledge (I’m 17, senior year starting next semester) and if i do choose to do accounting i will hopefull try to work or do an internship at a restaurant. At the end of the day, I don’t enjoy sitting behind a desk and i just realised that when i did an internship recently, so i dont know what path to take…
I highly recommend going for an accounting degree first. Opening a business and running a restaurant often takes many years of experience and hard work. It can be frustrating if your business doesn’t succeed, and will be very costly. Starting with accounting will get you going for the first few years and have you build some savings, so perhaps after working a few places, you could consider going into restaurant financial management and the sort.
I also like cooking too, but I realized that for me, cooking is more of a hobby that I will start to dislike if I have to do it near boiling heat every day, and cook fast! I’m not discouraging you, but you should really consider this.
@ancafeninja Thank you so much! I think I’ll stick to getting that accounting degree first and think about the restaurant later
