BSChE and AP credits

Hi, I’m looking for some assistance with understanding the BSChE degree requirements and how AP credits are applied. Based on this link http://chbe.rice.edu/Content.aspx?id=106, the ChemE degree plan breaks down as follows:

132 Total Hours

18 Chemistry
15 Math
7 Physics
41 Chemical/Biomolecular

15 Engineering Specialization

96 hours

12 D1 (Language/History/Etc)
12 D2 (Social Sciences)

12 D3 (General Science/Math)

36 hours

So that is 132 hours without including 3 hrs for Freshmen Writing, and 1 hr for LPAP (PE)

So my question is if a student has AP credit that is not awarded D1/D2/D3 credit, how would those credits be used/useful? For example AP English Lit/Lang get you ENGL 121 and ENGL 122 but they are not given D1/D2/D3 credit and you already have 132 hours for the degree with other required classes? Same with AP US and World History. What am I missing?

For Chemical Engineering, it seems that the most useful APs are in Math and science because you will have plenty of D3 credits. Unfortunately, I think you are correct that you can’t use APs for D1 and D2. My D is doing ChemE too and will probably accept credit for AP Calculus only.

Ok, that was what I thought. No credit for AP Lit/Lang or for APUSH and APWH seems kinda cruel. I’m not sure I will let my DD know this just yet as I still want her to apply to Rice LOL.
