BU (film) vs. Davidson vs. DePauw vs. KU (architecture) vs. Webster (full tuition) vs. UCLA (OOS debt)

No. Just this one. Normally I would have already closed such a circular conversation, but opted to hold off until the hard deadline had passed.

It seems that many people telling me to go to Davidson feel that I’m entirely undecided despite me stating that I’m not. I think what I need is to decide on what I want to do is have a lot of time dedicated to that field. I believe I will never make a decision on what I want to do if I go to a LAC and don’t take classes that truly immerse one in that field. Yes, Davidson has film related classes, but not nearly comparable to a school that will provide me a pre-professional experience. Same with architecture.

I’d understand that decision if the OP had dropped out of the conversation. But the OP is obviously finding some benefit from processing all. And he may continue to find benefit in the debriefing stage after the decision has been made.

So what’s the harm in keeping it open? I’m hard pressed to find the detriment to the forum when so many seem to be interested in continuing this conversation. Just my 2 cents.

Hm. too bad. A lot of posters have spent time trying to help OP and closing the thread down right away after May 1 is a bummer. I hope OP will be able to update before you close it. I know I’ll be less likely to chime in on these types of threads if I think they’ll be closed before the OP updates the crowd.

If your deadline were right now, what would you choose?

The OP has been asked to provide an update once the decision has been made. Should they be unable to do so in time, they can always PM me to reopen the thread so an update can be posted.

I haven’t read all the back and forth, but I can say that KU Architecture is an enormous commitment – not unique to KU, of course, true of any Architecture program. I know KU architecture faculty, and the stories they tell about their students sound a lot like 1st year med students – long long days, a few hours rest, then back at it. So if a student is not deeply committed to that path and willing to sacrifice, they might want to pass on it.

That’s your choice. You simply need to get an internship and move from there. Many. people in so many industries don’t have formal coursework in that field.

You continue to be told this but refuse to listen.

Debt is never good. You are talking about serious debt.

You are headed into a horribly paying and inconsistent field.

You debt will likely make you a statistic, a casualty of people that can’t save for retirement. The connections you’d make at a Davidson will likely open up doors in ANY field. Depauw May be better for you.

Bu with the LA semester is going to cost more than you think and won’t necessarily give you the extensive contacts you think. It may…or may not.

You are a broken record. We are broken records.

You assume you must take classes directly in your major. I assume otherwise.

You said you have health issues. I hope you step back. This is too much a rush for u. Ask for a deferral. And apply to a better set of schools for u

Or choose a cheap one. Any one. And then think more about it over the summer.

Again one only needs to do a LinkedIn search to find plenty Of Davidson alums and students in film. You could choose other schools and find the same. I just did again. Lots of Davidson in film.

If you could afford other schools you would not get the pushback. But you can’t…

Here’s some well known alumn. You could find similar for Depauw. Again. We’ll known…not the only…

Life is long with a lot of excitement, twists and turns. Many will have jobs, even within film, that don’t exist today or you don’t know about.

When you’re in debt, all that excitement disappears.

I wish more young people understood that for so many of us – especially those in more humanities-related fields as opposed to hard sciences – what we do for a living is completely and utterly unrelated to what we majored in during college. That doesn’t mean the skills we acquired there are unrelated or unimportant. But you can’t predict what directions your life and career will take. A good liberal arts education is going to be valuable wherever you go.

OP, have you looked through the different course options at each of your affordable universities? Have you mapped out what 8 semesters at each one looks like? Have you looked at LinkedIn results for your careers of interest for each of the universities? Have you looked at the faculty bios in related departments to see what kind of connections might be found there? Checked out the careers services for each university?

If you can’t find a single university appealing from among your affordable choices, then take a gap year and restart the process next year.

Right now you sound as though you are strongly opposed to any of your affordable options. If that doesn’t change in the next 24 hours, then I’m not optimistic about your outlook and attitude about starting at an affordable option in the fall.

If you want an available option to fall back on next spring, check out the deferral options at the 3 universities, as some schools are more open to deferrals than others.

OP, good luck to you. I feel you will regret your choice with debt down the road. The older you will realize passing up Davidson was a HUGE mistake.

There are many threads like this on CC, but yours is by far the biggest no brainer on which school to choose.

As often happens during college search snd selection, the process involves ever narrowing concentric circles. Ideally a college that you like and can afford is in the center.

Over the course of this thread’s debate I think you’ve come to realize that you really, really want to study film and that non-film options are not acceptable fits. That’s good. Now you know.

The financial element is fuzzier because we really can’t know your family’s financial situation. You need to have a detailed, unemotional talk with them about THEIR finances. Your intentions and potential earning power are irrelevant. It will be their debt.

If all options turn out to be no-gos for what ever reasons, then a gap year can be a positive and enlightening experience.

So…what did you decide to do? Good luck to you regardless.

I chose Davidson, and I already feel like I’m going to regret it forever. I guess I’m a goddamn masochist who can’t let himself be happy. Thank you to everyone here. I understand you were all trying to help, but now I feel like a complete failure.

Please celebrate your decision, you can change your mindset.

You can achieve all of your goals from Davidson. Go to LinkedIn now and search for Davidson grads working in film and/or architecture. There’s a network ready and waiting to help you…making the first contact is on you. I’m not saying you need to do that now, but use that network for next year’s summer opportunities, as one example. Good luck to you.

There is another poster on this forum who just very recently decided to look at the cup as half full instead of half empty. Please do the same.

Embrace your choice, and go with the idea you are going to love it and do well…because if you have those thoughts, you WILL love it and do well.

So I just thought of this last night.

My college GF at Syracuse. Majored in Psych. Basically bombed first year. Parents were going to pull her out yet didn’t at the last minute.

Did nothing activity wise. No clue in life except wanted to live in NYC.

I was a year ahead of her. Broadcast major. Graduated and after 9 months of unemployment got a job at ESPN…they only hire on short term contracts, at least back then.

She came to live with me in CT. That failed. She took a job in the city at a copier place.

Somehow got into a role which then has gotten her creative and producing roles at Viacom, Paramount and more. Today her title is Executive Producer Showtime.

I wanted to be in tv. I went to arguably the top tv/journalism school in the country. I worked in the field for 9 months, far longer than the majority of my classmates. She had zero aspiration. Zero involvement. A liberal arts degree. Got an in…didn’t care about the industry…but maximized her efforts and contacts. While she’s been laid off a whole lot and gone through financial inconsistencies, she’s there. And in creative and leadership roles.

You are going to get a world class education. Quit the bad attitude and woe is me. Take advantage. Share your goals and aspirations with your professors. Join the club of kids that make movies. Certainly you have a cell phone ? Today that’s the most important piece of equipment. The school will have a production team for school videos (like promotional), events, sports and more. Find out how to join.

The only reason you will fail is because you want to. You are attending a school that 99.9% of kids wish they could. A school with contacts, interns and alums working in the field.

You aren’t bankrupting yourself or your family. You aren’t mortgaging your future.

Time to grow up. Nothing is assured no matter where you go. Only you can bring yourself success. But not with that attitude.

I could only dream of attending a school like Davidson. Be thankful that your hard work has paid off and given you access to a world class experience at a very discounted price.
