Hi, I am debating on whether I should attend BU or UMass Boston for Computer Science / biochemistry. BU would be 25k per year after aid (12k scholarship and the rest of the aid being loans) whereas UMass Boston would be about 5k per year after aid. My goal is to work in the biotech industry and BU has tons of research opportunities for students, so I feel like that would help me tremendously. The debt from BU is scary as I have absolutely no help financially. Can anyone help me out here? Not much time left to decide.
Can you afford 80k extra in debt? I would think Umass Boston would attract biotech companies as it’s located in Boston. It’s really going to be your initiative to take advantage of opportunities that arise either at Umass Boston or BU.
Check this information with the university, but In UMass Boston you can have a Master in 5 years, 4 years of College and 1 year of Master, ( the Master are normally two years), you study hard one year more, but you pay half price for a Master.
My girlfriend saved up around 30k in less than a year at her 80k/year job so that is why I’m sitting on the fence about this. Technically if I got a decent paying job after graduation I could pay it off in a few years. I feel like BU has more national recognition and prestige so I would always be able to have that on my side and it’d probably be easier to land a job?
I like the idea of getting a master’s in 5 years, although I feel like there must be a catch? The quality of education might be lower because it seems like they are rushing through the master’s program as opposed to the traditional 2 year approach. How do they do a master’s in one year?
Not sure how your math is working here. If you live on campus, BU is 72k per year. - 12k in scholarships, that’s 60k per year x 4 = 240k. Or are you living at home? Even living at home, it will cost you about 38k per year, easily for BU.
I’m not living on campus, I live with my mom in Boston.
I am a transfer student, I should have mentioned that I am a transfer student living in Boston, my apologies.
You do a Master in one year because you start the Master’s courses in your fourth year of college.
Other college and universities are similar, if I remember well, Wesleyan and Northeastern they do too.
What year will you be starting and did they (both) accept all your credits from your current school?
@suzyQ7 They both accepted all of my credits, I will be starting as a junior
How much will you owe in loans after 2 years at each school?
Around 10k at UMass and 65k-70k at BU @suzyQ7
