BU School of Hospitality Administration

How well known is the BU School of Hospitality Administration. How’s recruiting there? Is it competitive?

Recruiting is typically really great, however this year is sort of an exception due to the bad economy (Its a shame because this is my graduation year and most companies are hesitant to hire). But last year and the year before, we had reps from every major brand, and tons of independent hotels coming to interview here. Being in the city, every hotel in the area knows about us and the quality of students we put out. I honestly can't contact a hotel in the area without hearing about so and so from BU who works there now and is doing a great job. Getting a job is really not a problem with the number of contacts you will make and the opportunities you will get. For the proactive students who work to distinguish themselves, the door is open to a wealth of positions come graduation.

The school is great because it is of the smaller programs here at BU. The entire school has under 400 students in it, although this number is growing as the school's reputation grows. This allows us to have a tight-knit community within the larger BU community. We each have personal mailboxes and the Dean knows MANY of us by name. The professors all know pretty much every student and the atmosphere is very community-oriented.

Wow, sounds pretty good! Many thanks )

Devilsrule- can you share anymore information about the Hospitality School at BU? I have a family member looking to transfer to a 4 yr school who is interested in hotel management. BU does not come up often on the list of schools that some of the top chains have on their recruitment schedule.
My family member is conflicted between majoring in Hospitality versus communications or something similar. Since so few schools have hospitality majors.

Well I think BU communications school is pretty good so he/she might be able to switch majors easily if he/she wants to major in something different.

I don’t know too much about hospitality or communications but I know that BU is known for its communications program. In the field of hospitality, you may want to try looking at Cal Poly Pomona in California, Cornell in New York, BU here in Mass., and University of Las Vegas in Nevada.

Check Purdue, Michigan State, UDelaware, Johnson & Wales, Penn State-University Park also if looking at hotel management. I’m at JWU now but was at Purdue for a year so if need info on both programs just PM me.

I am also interested in the SHA program at Boston University. Is this program competitive for transfer students?

Exactly what different types of job opportunities can be offered if I planned on majoring in hotel management?
