My college counselor said that among the schools I've visited, those two are my best bet for ED.

I'm interested in double majoring in PolySci and Journalism, and I'm taking a Pre-Law track as well.

Which is better than the other? In terms of name, academics, students, culture, and financial aid? Also, share some of the pros/cons of each school?

I’d recommend you check out “College ****”. www.***********.com

It’s now free with no fees. It is very good at comparing schools in all aspects.

As to my opinion - clearly on the GW forum you’re going to get GW-biased info, but here’s my 2 cents.

My “S” did not like BU for many reasons. The final decision came down to location - Wash DC has a better overall climate, and proximity to Federal gov’t and NGO’s for internships. He’s International Affairs and planning law school also.

GW has a very good program for journalism and public media affairs - SMPA’s under the College of Arts and Sciences with connections to the White House and other Gov’t agencies.

By the way - make sure you “visit” each school! You’ll know 15" after being there if it “feels” right or not.

By the way - as parents “we” loved BC over BU any day.

Swim, same for my daughter. She is now a freshman at GW and loved it when we visited. (We ended up visiting more than once) When we went to BU neither of us liked it at all. I didn’t tell her how I felt about BU because I didn’t want to influence her opinion, but after the visit, tour, etc we talked about it and we both just didn’t like it. To be fair though, I know students who have loved it there, so that is why it’s so important to try to visit and see how you feel about a school, and see if you can imagine yourself there as a student. We also visited American a couple of times and we both really tried to like it more than we did because it would have been cheaper for us, but we were’t feeling it there either. Try to visit the schools that interest you!

Oops, I see that maybe you have gone to see both schools. So, what did you think? Can you see yourself at one more than the other? As far as academics, I would guess that they are pretty similar, so it would probably come down to which city your prefer. Good luck!

I visited both schools. I preffered BU over GW; it seemed to be more diverse, and in general, I prefer Boston over DC. My only issue is, which is a smarter decision since I’m going for pre law? I feel like GW would be a smarter choice, although my heart’s kind of with BU.

And CJ Madison, I’ll PM you for the website. I don’t know why it keeps blanking out the site name.

I don’t see how either school would make a difference for pre-law. Students go to law school from colleges all over the country. you could check with pre-law advising at both schools to see what law schools their grads get into & what % of law school appllicants gain admission somewhere. If you prefer Boston to DC, then that has to figure into your decision-making.

If your heart is with BU and you prefer Boston over DC, then by all means I would go for BU for ED. You can go to law school from either one and it’s most important that you like where you go for undergrad and that you go where you feel most comfortable.

I feel like GW is a more logical decision for ED though, dispite the fact that I liked BU better. I mean, the internship opportunities there are phenomenal, while the chances of getting a good political internship in the Boston area is kind of slim.

So right now, it’s more of a question of going with my mind or heart? =

Go to the one that you receive the most financial aid from.

Pick one major. Double majoring is typically superfluous. Either pre-law (poli sci or IAFF) or journalism. Either you want to be a lawyer, or a journalist.

If you want politics, DC & GW… hands down.

If you prefer Boston, pick some school there.

One disadvantage of applying ED to any college is you can’t compare financial aid offers. Maybe there’s some way to see what yuor FA offer would be for both BU/GW, but I’m not aware how to do that applying ED.

Swim -
I am in the EXACT same dispute as well. I am fascinated with politics and journalism, but I didn’t really love DC. It seemed like it might get old after the first year. On the other hand, Boston was awesome. I had a great vibe; the people were really friendly and generally nice.

However, I feel that GW offers more in terms of internships and connections, considering that it is in the heart of our nation’s political spectrum. I REALLY DON’T KNOW.
I’m not applying early to any school. I guess we’ll just see where I get in and how much money the school is willing to deduct.

I was once interested in the pre-law track at GW, but they have since dismissed the program because of little interest from the student body and because the university feels that students should not go from undergrad to law school; they need a year or two break.

For pre law I would definitely recommend GW over BU, it is also ranked higher but not such a significant difference that is really worth thinking about too much. Also the internship opportunities are amazing at GW and being in the epicenter of the government is a tremendous advantage, but really take the time to spend a few days at each school/city if possible…that is the only way you will know, and even if its awesome for everyone else, it really only counts how they feel to you.
Good luck, both wonderful schools!

i’m in the same boat pretty much. I’m going to DC this saturday, ad already visited BU, but the two are my top schools

Basically from what i know, GW has a better name. BU has more diversity and i think gives more financial aid. it also seems that boston is more affordable. GW definitely has the better climate, considering winters in boston are not ideal. GW also has the better location for what you want to do, but shouldnt be a major factor. I mean you can go to law school at georgetown or gw which is what really matters… youll get the internships and job offers then. it doesnt really make too mcuh of a difference undergrad. either way youll get a good education so if you like BU, go for it! maybe i’ll end up at the same place as you lol

GW is pretty good with aid. This is Colonials Weekend, btw. Parents weekend at Maryland, too. DC will be packed (more than usual). Did you plan a GW tour?

Schmohawk: I already visited both campuses. Wait, which school has a 6 year BA/JD program? I was not aware of this being offered at either school…
