I an international student which makes the tuition + cost of living for BU 70k and UT Austin 50k (approximate values). My parents will be funding me and paying for me. So while the cost is definitely a factor, it won’t exactly impact me and having to take loans after university. I hear both of them are great schools but I need help deciding. I have applied for a liberal arts course in both universities.
BU is International Relations
UT Austin is International Relations and Global Studies
Congratulations on having two great choices! I’d recommend UT Austin given the difference in costs. Both are great schools. Both have urban campuses. Both are in great urban environments. Weather will be dramatically better (warmer) at UT (where I just visited last month). Given the cost, the only difference I can see that favors BU is that the campus and city will probably be more diverse. UT includes about 95% in-state students, so undergrads typically come to school with lots of connections. But I was on the UT campus and saw lots of students; student body did seem diverse and friendly, not stereotypically anything. And Austin very much has an international vibe. Good luck!
I’d pick UT Austin. There’s no significant difference between academic quality but the cost difference is huge.
I guess two big differences would be 1) weather: very hot in August-Octover, warm the rest of the time in Austin v. Very cold November-March in Boston. 2) sports: Austin has excellent teams and many students will consider it important to support them so if you live sports it’s incredible but if you hate sports it’s not fun.
