Budget Cuts???

Yesterday, my s. made the decision to attend TCNJ. He chose from among several good schools. We are out of state, and so didn't see tidal wave coming. Today, we read of the huge budget cuts. Question: there is still 24 hours left for my s. to change his mind. There was a close second, a private institution in NY. Are we idiots to pass this by and take a chance on TCNJ?

In my opinion, from what I’ve heard from students and on the tours I’ve been, TCNJ is a great liberal arts college to attend to. To be honest with you, It would depend on your son’s major and we don’t know the name of the private university in NY, so I can’t really compare both.

Son’s major is computer science. Other choices included Marist (great computer science program) and Union College (great overall reputation, but weaker comp sci). He really liked what he saw at TCNJ, especially the students and the teachers, but I know what budget cuts can do to a college. Also, computer science is so technology dependent which, of course, takes money. Thoughts? Thanks.

On the budget, TCNJ is set to lose around $5 million. The Board of Trustee’s said they would try to find ways to make up the lost money through “cost-cutting measures” before they resort to increasing tuition for the students.

As for Computer Science, TCNJ really isn’t well renowned for their computer science program. TCNJ tutition (for 2009-2010) was basically around $23,000. But with scholarships, that can be easily lowered (I assume you and your son received TCNJ’s financial aid package) from what I saw, cost-wise TCNJ would be better than Marist College, but they do have a better Computer Science program. I honestly think, because of the cost, and the environment at TCNJ, that it would be a better place to attend. And, like I’ve told my friends… If they don’t like it, they can transfer.

Hope this helps! :)
