When my family went to take the tour, our tour guide said that she was a 3rd year student and that she decided the “pick your own major” option. I don’t remember exactly what she said, but she said two of the subjects she was majoring is were media studies and English. Does anyone have any experience with this? What other details are there?
Because so many students have large amounts of AP credit, it is common for UVa students to complete double majors.
Across the country, it is common for tour guides to say that everyone can create their own major. I don’t know the details about UVa’s policies, but it is usually harder than it would first appear to create your own major at most universities.
She also said that she still had to pick one other subject to major or focus in.
You mean the student was designing a major, right? Everyone picks their own major.
Here are the details about interdisciplinary majors: http://college.as.virginia.edu/awards/imp
Yeah, that’s what I meant. Thanks!
Well… It looks similar but it doesn’t seem exactly what she had described…
In addition to the option of creating your own new interdisciplinary major (which is not easy to do), there already are many EXISTING interdisciplinary major programs that have already been set up. Because these programs already exist, they are easier to use as your major. They are listed at the link below, along with the traditional majors. In some cases, there may be competitive entry (such as applying as a second year) to some of the interdisciplinary majors.
