How does Vandy do in placing kids on wall street, specifically investment banking recruiting. How good does a Vanderbilt degree look like compared to lets say georgetown?

Vandy does not have an undergraduate business program/degree and personally, I think it may the school’s one weakness.

Vandy offers a MS in Finance and you can check it out here:

If Wall Street is your goal, you should contact the Career Center at each school and ask for their placement stats for Wall Street firms. That should give you a good idea.

Wall Street + Vanderbilt do not go hand and hand.

That said, Vanderbilt does have a fine Economics program (semi-rigorous) and financial economics minor that would surely get you going. See the link below.

Given the proxmity to NYC and the Business School, I’d say Georgetown is the better bet. Plus they have a Wall Street Alliance Network.

Best of luck!

Economics is the largest department under the college of arts and sciences, for what that’s worth. Most pre-business students pursue a degree in economics under the Finance or Managerial Studies concentrations.

People know Vandy kids are smart and thus recruit there. DON’T go to a school just because its a better shot at a 9-5, you’ll hate it…

I am a Vandy junior majoring in economics and financial economics. I have always wanted to work in finance and on Wall Street and have found it very difficult.

IB/wall street recruiting at Vandy is absolutely terrible. Don’t fall into the trap by listening to people’s comments about “well there’s an econ/financial econ program blah blah”. The only NYC IB bank that did summer recruiting was BAML (bank of american merrill lynch). I have no idea where those “stats” from the career center come from, because I can honestly say I know all of the kids going into IB and those numbers dont sound right.

I was able to secure an internship this summer just because I networked extremely hard. I also have previous finance internships and above a 3.5+. However, none of the jobs I applied to were even listed on the career board. all the interviews I got were from networking HEAVILY (cannot stress this enough) with alumni. That being said, I will be working at UBS in equity sales and trading this summer. I was able to get to the superdays for IB at deutsche, credit suisse, BAML, houlihan lokey (chicago), barclays. I got to first rounds with goldman, morgan stanley, and lazard asset management. However, I cannot stress enough how over the top I had to go to be able to get these interviews. I also have a very strong resume.

Overall, if you want to work in finance I would NOT recommend vanderbilt. NOt only do we have weak recruiting efforts, but the courses offered really don’t help you if you want to work on wall street. Also the financial economics minor is not rigorous at all. i found myself very unprepared for my interviews at the big banks. I would have rather gone to a school like NYU who have courses on specific topics i’m interested in such as equity markets rather than waste my time in a “latin american economic development” course. Also, at most (possibly all?) of my interviews I was asked why are you at vandy when you want to go into finance?
