Business major, how do I get experience?

Hi Everyone,

I am heading into my 3rd year,BBA. Lately I have been really interested in medicine and have read up on how to work towards med school. I plan on taking the pre-req courses starting this year. I plan to start volunteering at a hospital in a month.
My question is how do I get clinical experience or research experience as a business major? Who should I approach and what exactly should I be looking for?

Thanks!

Clinical experience is a matter of volunteering at sites where you will have hands on patient contact: hospitals, free-standing clinics, nursing homes, group homes for the physically or mentally disabled.

You just call up and ask. Expect to get lots of “no” answers. (Happens regardless of your major. Don’t take it personally.)

There are 2 kinds of research: basic lab and clinical. You need actual lab experience and skills to do lab research–so that will have to wait until you’ve completed at least your intro level science classes. Then it’s matter of making lots of email and personal contacts with your professors until one says yes. If you have some specialized math (stats, data analysis) or computer skills (programming or scripting), you can use those to your advantage and seek lab positions now.

Clinical research would be in things like public health programs where you recruit patients for studies, gather & analyze data. If there is a public health dept at your college, you might try asking professors there.

The best chances are at you college. Contact places/ people in charge.
