Business management major switching to premed

Hey, I've been researching for the last several weeks as what to do with my education and I'm not going to be able to see my advisor until next week. I am in CC right now and I am 20 credits away from getting A.S. for business management but I've had a change of mind and want to get into the medical field, specifically going to medical school after I get my B.A. I have taken mostly business classes so I will use my electives and take extra classes to enroll in Bio, chem, and other courses that will help the MCAT and are requirements for medical school.

The question I have is if I should keep majoring in business management while taking the the classes that entitle "premed" or is it better to start a new major. I currently have a 3.6 GPA and I plan on improving to at least a 3.8. I have not seen any threads reguarding students going premed with a business management major. I have no problem overloading and doing work, I just want to know the best option.

I have read that other majors are looked highly because of the diversity at medical school but I'm not sure how they would look at a student that is in business management wishing to become a doctor.

Major is absolutely irrelevant, GPA is everything, unless you are URM. Warning - business classes are much easier than Bio, Orgo, higher level Bio that are required by some med. School. You are saying that “I have no problem overloading and doing work” - it is not reflected in your GPA. Aim for all A’s from now on if you want reasonable chance at Med. School. Best of luck!

Thanks. I was going to minor in business management and take up a new major in Liberal Arts and Sciences, I rather focus on the science, bio, etc since I want a career in the medical field rather than business. Should I keep the major with business? I understand everything about requirements for medical school and being prepared for the MCAT, but keeping with business seems irrelevant.

I thought from reading other posts here and SDN that most med schools would prefer you to take the med school prereqs at a 4 year institution vs. a CC.

kmkord is correct.

You really need to take the pre med classes at a 4 year college. You can major in anything you want to other than a vocational major. Having a business related minor won’t hurt you. Get any other non pre med requirements out of the way at the CC but don’t start taking them (pre med requirements/new major) there, doing so would have negative impact on your med school applications.

So switching the major from business management to liberal arts and sciences wouldn’t matter? I was going to receive an A.S. in Business from the CC, take an extra year to get an A.S. in liberal arts and sciences, and then transfer to UConn and take all the premed requirements there while majoring in the liberal arts and sciences.

I was planning on going to UConn for the last two years and I was hoping to do my premed requirements there as the education is much higher than at CC. Getting into medical school, do I have to do everything at a 4 year college from the start to finish? The business department at the school is highly respected and I’d have to put in my effort to stay on the dean’s list, but I want to put my focus solely on medical field/sciences, and everything to prepare me for the MCAT.

Would transferring to UConn and starting from scratch there be the best option when medical schools are reviewing my application?
