Business

I got into Vassar ED II and I currently have no serious intention of majoring in Business or pursing a career in business. I know Vassar does not offer Business as a major, but does Vassar have business classes or a program that can allow students to get their MBA? I was just curious.

And another question...
In humanities and writing classes are there in class exams or are most assignments out of class papers?

Thanks :)

Question 1: No. Vassar doesn't offer any postgraduate degrees (except maybe that Dartmouth 3-2 thing). Econ is popular, though...

Question 2: For writing classes, papers, and it depends on the humanities class.

(Congrats on getting in! It's a lovely place.)

You can get into the best MBA programs in the country if you do well at Vassar. You can study virtually anything to do that. Vassar has good econ.

You can get a very good preparation for graduate business school at Vassar - and many go on to get an MBA from top schools. But you cannot study business at Vassar - they stick strictly to the cannons of the Liberal Arts.

A good route is to major in Economics, and take courses with quantitative content. Add in some calculus and computer science classes, and you will be well positioned to compete in the MBA pool against all the engineers who will also be applying. But also take courses where you have to read a lot, write a lot, and speak in class to make your points and defend them - it is great prep for those business school cases. Finally, there is an intro accounting course tucked into the Econ Department. Check out the catalog online.

It was more than a few years back, but one member of my class at Vassar was accepted at the following MBA programs as a senior:
- Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration
- Sloan School of Management at MIT
- Columbia Business School
- University of Chicago Business School
- Stanford Graduate School of Business
Now, in those days it was a little easier to get into an MBA program right out of school. These days they (wisely) prefer a few years of work experience.

The net: You can use your time at Vassar to get very well set for any of the professional graduate programs - business, law medicine, architecture, etc. I have classmates who went to top schools in all of these areas and have had interesting and rich careers. Best wishes with your applications!
